looks great jhodge! just to be clear, after scrapping the tape after the first wheel, you just painted the tire too and it just came off?
did you paint the lugs the same way, or just buy black ones?

the paint will wear off the rubber. no biggie...and index cards will work better around the back lip of the rims too. black lugs came from wheelers offroad.

I just finished painting mine, thanks to this thread. The longest part was cleaning all the corrosion off of the wheels and prepping them for paint. I primed 2 coats, and painted 2-3.

Ok, just wondering if anybody used a clear coat, and if they did, how much more of a gloss finish did it give? If you didn't use a clear coat, does washing the rims scratch them easily with just the flat black? And by easily, I mean, with a sponge or a soft brissel brush. Would there be that much of a difference between sanding with primer, and not sanding with a primer on the alloy wheels?

Thanks guys, and you're really making me want to just go out and do it. But it's the wife's truck and she takes a little more convincing than me.

Jamie, Do you still have the same rims? Have they held up pretty good?

they've been gone for quite a while, but held up fine while on the road. gouges off road were taken care of easily though.

Gotcha. I'm thinking of rattle canning it vice plasti-dip since I know it is what I want. Thanks for getting back to me.

it will wear off by itself when driving. not sure if you want it off sooner.

To clear coat or not to clear coat?

I understand the reason why you didn't clear coat: ease of inevitable touch up.

But how did the paint hold up without clear coat, eg road wear and washing (with a soft mitt, etc)?

I saw a guy in town who painted his 98 stock alloys (like mine) and used clear coat. I have to say, the wheels looked gorgeous. He also sandblasted, primed with adhesion promoter, and finished it (like I said) with clear coat.

Nice write up. I can't wait to do my wheels this spring/summer.

I did not clear coat and I'm going to have to make my first serious touch ups soon due to some scrapes from swapping tires. It's been almost 3 years IIRC
