Oh same here, for years as a kid I wanted to be a pilot in the Air Force. I was in ROTC in high school for the first year and was planning on going all the way until I heard from another friend's dad who was an air force pilot that I would never get to be more than a co-pilot because of my bad vision (needed glasses most of my life). And back then, the air force would not accept anyone as a pilot that had corrective laser surgery...you basically had to be born with perfect vision and have good genetics there. I've heard recently though that they changed that rule, though I'm not sure to what extent. Laser corrective surgery was still pretty new stuff when I was a kid so I'm not surprised the military had that standpoint. We're talking about billion dollar aircraft here lol.

It crushed me when he told me that at 14ish years old... But looking back I'm glad I didn't go that route, military wouldn't have been for me as a young adult.

Don't focus too much on WHAT your job is. You just need work experience. It's amazing how many college kids never work ANY job by the time they graduate (this was true when I was in school, too, it's even worse, now).

It's not really about the job, it's about the people you work with. My wife worked at the campus lecture hall where they hosted concerts etc... - she pushed chairs and tables around for a living. But she loved that job because of the people she worked with/for. Then there are the "dream jobs" (at least on paper) that suck the life out of you because your supervisor sucks.

Campus jobs are by far the best thing you can do as a student. I started working at the campus bike shop my freshman year. Ended up managing it by the time I left. It was great, the only bike shop on the planet that was only open 9-4, and closed on weekends (meaning I still had my weekends free to do whatever - usually ride).

Everyone i know who is ex military told me not to join. Though they enjoyed their time in it, they dont recommend it to anyone
And i was pretty set on being a cop buy the commitment was alot because i was in a police program all of hs and i would still have to wait another 3 years before I could even goto a academy to become a cop so i was like nah i dont wanna wait

yeah same here. I nearly joined again when I was 18 and almost out of high school because I didn't know what I wanted to do in life. Went to the recruitment office in town (mind you, this was right after 9/11 happened) and they were salivating at the thought of recruiting anybody. I went so far as to get to the signature part of committing and told them I wanted to take it home and think about it. Talked it over with my grandfather who was a Marine tank commander and he talked me out of it right quick. I'm so glad he did too, because I would have gotten wrapped up in the early part of the war in the middle east. Not going to get political on that but I think anybody can agree, that's not something you want to get in the middle of as an 18 year old just trying to figure out what to do in life.

I wanted to be a Naval Aviator flying F-14's. Makes sense when you look at the release date of Top Gun. My dad, a squid himself, even told me he had some connections that might help get me into the naval academy if I wanted.

Then, as I got older I realized how absurdly romanticized that movie was. I wasn't okay with being given the responsibility to take someone else's life - wasn't for me... It didn't help that the F-14 was decommissioned by the time I was "of age" anyway...

F-14 Tomcats were one of my favorites as a kid, too. They kept them around for a long time because they were the only fighter jet capable of firing the Phoenix missiles if I remember right? I really wanted to fly the F-16s though, and then I remember the F-22 coming out as a kid and wanted to fly that.

reminds me of the reasoning that orthodox jews use when they have a machine "dial" their phone for them since they technically can't use technology on Saturdays. You're still dialing the phone...
