Im trying to resolve my shifting/power issue on my 2018 TRD Off Road. I'm thinking a gear swap to 4:30 might be enough. I plan on staying with the stock tires. Seems like many are going to 4:88's and hopefully I could snag a nice set of used gears.

And yes I have the latest TSB 18 and it made no difference.

    Thanks

4.30 is nice with the Manual, would think they would be good in the Automatics too.

I am thinking you have an Auto , a manual would have come with 4:30's ? If thou have a auto , the OR came with a 8.75" RE and the only after market gears available for it so far are the 4:88,s . I may be wrong about this but I am pretty sure .

not even broken in yet let alone computer hasn't learned your driving style yet. It should smooth out closer to 5k. would give that ago before tearing into the drive train especially if you're sticking with stock tires.

Manuals come with 4.30’s. @SearArtist has my 4.30’s on his automatic and can provide some input on how they do.

The only aftermarket gearing for the TRD OR is 4.88’s and 5.13’s through Nitro Gear. I am running 4.88’s and 35’s on my rig and love it.

If you plan on staying with the stock tire size, then it's not worth it. Unless you can find someone with a MT truck that is swapping to 4.88's. That's the only reason I have them. It made sense and was far cheaper than a straight gear swap front and rear.

I have 4.88's on 35's, with latest Tsb, and 38k miles and my truck still has shifting issues. Its more torquey with the gears but thats all it did for on pavement. Check out OVtune think he went through the whole tranny programming.

What effect has it made on drivability and gas mileage? Yes, I hope to find a guy with a MT that wants to make the switch. I think 4:88’s would be to extreme for me. Did you just swap out the gears or complete third member?

I was a tiny bit disappointed with the stock gearing on the Off-Road auto, especially considering my old 3rd Gen 4Runner was 4.30 auto. I think it makes a nice pairing with 31 or 32" tires. MPG would probably take a hit, though.

    Swapped diffs.

I'm on 33's, but gas mileage is comparable to stock. 18.5-19mpg with mostly highway driving at 80+mph (80mi/day round trip commute).

Not sure how it would do with the stock tire size as your RPM's will increase and I don't know your driving habits. I drive like I'm qualifying for the Daytona 500, YMMV.

Ok, I’ll start looking for 4:30’s. I don’t think I’d take a gas mileage hit as now it’s constantly shifting on the highway while trying to maintain 70 mph. I can’t use the classifieds yet as I don’t have 50 post.

Your best bet is to find someone in your local area that is upgrading their MT to 4.88's and hit them up for their stock 3rd members before the swap. @SearArtist and I swapped at the shop.

I’m sure it’d be better at 80 but I’d have to drive 100 miles to see those speed limits.

I just put an add in the NW regional section.
