There's a responsibility of both sides here. Bikes absolutely should use the shoulder/bike lane when prudent, but from my experience cagers tend to get too wrapped up in the "they're in MY lane" thing and get impatient and angry.

    Just. Not. Worth. It.

So you ran 5100's at the middle setting with 881's? I thought that was bad haha I thought they were only supposed to be set at zero

While I agree there could be some sort of registration fee that has cyclists pay their "fair share" of road maintenance fees (beyond reg fees for the cars that most of them have, sales tax, etc...), I don't think that excuses people in cars who pass unsafely.

BTW, I'm not angry or (trying to be) argumentative, just posting a different perspective. I don't expect anyone to change based on my stupid posts.

I look out for cyclist, some effort should be done so as well from a cyclist for their sake. Even on a high way when I still see a cyclist on my right I move over to the left lane. But god damn why do 1%, or less than, of these cyclist bike so close to the line between the shoulder and the highway lane? You lookin to get smacked the ~*beep*~ out by an 18 wheeler?

The last year Ive been sorta kinda a paid intern for a company owned by a family friend. I was doing industrial maintenance. There were things I liked and things I didn't. I really liked my coworkers because they didnt sugar coat anything. I learned by workimg right alongside them on most every job, especially the crummy ones. Id still be there but I decided to crack down on school more.

This is one of the reason why I worked where I did this summer, I don’t think very many college kids will have it on their resume and it paid decently.

Good question! I can't speak for all of them, but I know that if you ride farther to the right (where the pavement ends or there's crap in the gutter) you end up constantly swerving around that stuff. Not only is that kind of annoying and ruins your "flow", it also makes it hard for someone passing you to predict your path.

I'd rather pass someone I knew was able to ride a consistently straight line.

Why not stay in the center of the shoulder? Here in Austin the shoulder is plenty room.

    Another good question, lol.

I don't know. Seems like that would be a good idea to me. However, I have to wonder how often this actually happens.

Psychologically, you really only remember the things that stick out, like that annoying cyclist taking up a lane, but you don't consciously recognize the hundreds of other cyclists you pass every day without incident.

Like the ONE time a redneck threw a not-so-empty beer can at me while I was riding. That was 20+ years ago, but it still sticks out in my memory.

I've been on both sides, driven for years and been annoyed and cyclists, and been one myself (biked the entire Oregon coast as a teenager) I will just say this, some people on bikes are smart and considerate, they ride wherever they want until a car is coming, then move absolutely as far over as possible, I have no problem with them at all.
Then there are the people on bikes that think they have the same rights as a car and can ride in the middle of the lane (or ride double) and hold up traffic. Those people do not belong riding on the road. It's a simple case of realizing you are a body on a 30 lb bike up agains cars that weigh thousands of pounds, so act accordingly. I'll be as safe and considerate as I can, but when I come around a blind corner and I have the choice of hitting a truck head on, or hitting the bicicle that is riding in the middle of the lane, what are you gonna choose?
If everybody turned their brain on in the morning and respected everyone else on the road it would never be an issue
