This was not supposed to be a debate post rather to inform people. 99% of posts about this topic have nothing backing them up, this one on the other hand i have provided links to the top used oils to form your own option. I will say the supertech performs very well.

The PQIA website is a great reference in ensuring the lubricants meet off the shelf quality and correct labeling information. The true measure of a lubricant is rigorous testing in real-world field trials and demanding environments to ensure it preforms as advertised and harnesses the full potential of your vehicles.

Supertech does meet or exceed PQIA quality standards however, this does not provide any performance data to demonstrate its reliability in field trials.

My personal testimonial on AMSOIL performance and reliability is I change my oil once a year for 12 years and with 136,000 miles on my truck I have had zero mechanical problems. this is another field report on performance; https://www.amsoil.com/newsstand/se...s/articles/million-mile-trucking-testimonial/

Im not trying to be jerk here I am only trying to provide information on a particular brand of oil.

Additives or additive packages for oils are developed by 3 companies in the US...Infinium, Lubrizol, and Oronite (owned by Chevron). All the oil companies buy their additives then add to their own base stock. At the end of the day the oils end up being very similar.

If the oil requires rogue dealers to sell and push products for them, it's crap. Feels like a pyramid scheme like Scentsy or Avon. Get bent, we use our own experiences.

The best oils get advertising from real world people and experiences, not random guys who like to extend oil change intervals on everyones car.

Shell's Rotella is a good example of something became more than what it was intended. An industrial oil that is used in racing and high performance engines due to its characteristics.

As for Tacomas, I'm a 15 year Toyota tech, and oil is oil for our trucks, I just prefer synthetic in Towing/offroad rigs that see high temps for peace of mind.

Actually it is the opposite, less friction, less heat = longer service life.

    Understood.

    But neither does this......

    That's called antecdotal evidence.

You're new here. Claiming to not be selling anything. Yet every post relates to one product and 'our lab' or 'our testing'. The veil is very thin.......

Are you a tribologist? Chemist? Lead lab tech? Data analyst?

Independent lab tests are what speak to oil performance in 'field conditions'. But unless your test engines are precisely the same condition and driving conditions, even those will vary.

I think Amsoil is a fine product and would test well pre and post use. But it, nor any other boutique oil, are worth the price delta over other products. Especially in mass produced engines / vehicles. Even ones driven very hard.

My antecdotal evidence (since you like that) will be 3 old Hondas and 2 Nissans, a 280 and a 300zx-t. All on dino (Castrol GTX) at 7.5k OCIs, all with Fram filters (gasp), all between 100 and 250k, all with normal compression.

I'm using Mobile 1 Full Synthetic 5W-30 I buy at Costco when it's on sale.

Also, off topic... how does this new guy name himself "commy_2" and put a bald eagle with flag wings as an avatar, and then name himself "Sam"? Maybe I'm a hyper sensitive patriot.

Anyhow. All the debates on oil that never add up to anything are annoying.

    Scholarly?

It's a reasonably well written overview of the oil marketplace, touching on both recent history, current trends and future predictions; related to OCIs, viscosity and the 'purpose' of oil in terms of protection.

With a focus on consolidation, standardization, and collaboration with the OEMs to reduce overall variety, making the marketplace smaller and less confusing to the consumer.

Nothing wrong with any of this, and I suppose you could say it's semi scholarly, at least towards marketing trends. There is nothing scholarly about composition, testing, etc etc.

If you want to try and glean some 'feel good' data, the following jump out............

    1) Viscosity is getting lighter. OCIs are getting longer. Consumers and OEMs both care about protection.

    2) Some high dollar performance rides like Corvettes and Mercedes come with Mobil 1 from the factory.

    3) Amsoil is blurbed as an example of an independent product.

    So.

    1) that's pretty obvious, even if you are a semi enthusiast who only changes your own oil. The bulk of consumers are clueless about any of it. They buy the vehicle, drive it, pay to have it changed and never give it a thought.

    2) That is the most 'telling' piece of info in the whole article. Not saying it's a reason to make that choice, other than if it's good enough for them.........

    3) Yep. It's a blurb.

    As I mentioned earlier............

AMSoil dealers are a pain in the ass. For that reason alone I'll never use it. Mobil 1 pricing is solid from costco and works just fine.

Unfortunately this is 5 year old data.

If the tests were replicated today the results could be the same.

    Or not.

It's your vehicle, your free to use whatever oils you want, it's no skin off my nose. I chose to comment on this post to share some knowledge and experience with synthetic lubricants.
