Right, but you stayed working, right? We use it as a reason to clean house but even when the workload gets thin we keep the good guys no matter what. I have paid for my good guys to stay home just to make sure they don't go somewhere else.

Math is the big thing. Real world math. If kids can get basic algebra down and some trig, you can kill it in the trades.

Perfect case. I make more as a welder and am the last one to get cut from a crew at the end of a job because I have the math skills to do complex piping jobs. It's not hard math. But I took the time to learn it and now I stand out.

I also get brought on jobs like landing (2) 28,000 gallon propane tanks at the peak of my Killington with off-road cranes and trucks because the more you learn and the more training you get, obviously the more you can do. And some of it can be pretty cool. Along with piping numbers, I can rig and (had) gas licenses.

If you can get them into it now, they will be rich because who ever said it a few posts back, no kids want to do it. The money is there for the taking. But it's hard work and you need to have drive.

But the math. Keep up on the math if you can. I used trig daily for rolling offsets. Basic triangle equations you learn in middle school and early high school. From there you can go further into dynamic loading of structures, thermal expansion of metals, pre-site work ( which companies love to have workers and not some new age white hat do if they can find someone)...

Really is a great time for trades. Plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and obviously welding.

Got 2 of these left in my fridge, gotta restock on my next trip to Burlington!

Amazing how well that analogy works!

Did he afford that by plumbing, or owning/running a plumbing company? I didn't think there was THAT much money in working for someone else.

With the trades it's just an endurance race. And if you do it right, and plan for the future, you can make it easier on yourself as time goes by. Most of it sucks, but the money helps, and you do have some good times in there as well.

Shit, I love math. Working on getting a stem teaching degree, you know to make 40 maybe 50k a year. But don't worry once I get my degree I'll help the kids learn the skills to make twice what I can as an educator.

I had this debate with my brother a few years ago, he was trying to get me to go work at the shipyard in Kittery, I kept trying to explain that I need to be personally satisfied and have only found that when seeing kids learn and make better choices. That all being said, if I was 20 again, I would become an electrician as I have enjoy doing some electrical projects.

He owns the plumbing company. I believe the story is he worked for his dads company then went out on his own and did so good he bought out his dads company and his dad started working for him. Lol

Not too late. Shipyard is hiring like a bastard right now. Haha.

Hey teaching is super valuable. I was a punk ass kid and there's a lot to be said for people who care more about your future at a time when you are too stooopid in the brain to care about it yourself.

I mean my physics teacher taught me how fast I need to go on a snowboard to clear a road gap. There's things like that too. Haha.

Ya, think they are hiring like 700 or some shit like that. Just can't not convince myself that it's worth it. But I know I could make money which would allow for my family to have more, but I probably would be Grumpy bastard.

I do wish I had stuck with the trades, but my father died young, and at 17 there was no way I could take over the family business.

The kids watch this old house with me all the time, and I have them with me in the woodworking shop, working on the house, etc. I wish I could offer my son a chance at learning a trade young like I did, and then actually get licensed. I had as much electrical time in before college as most apprentices when they write their journeyman’s papers.
