Off-road is what I chose. Larger ring gear, rear locker, and crawl control are all either costly or unable to add later. Plus the OR is plenty suitable for your daily commute and at home off the beaten path.

Haha, no that’s my annual car insurance bill! Someone was commenting about 4x4 being expensive insurance wise.

Each one has its advantages and disadvantages. I also wouldn't discount a SR5 with upgraded entune.

I read the thread, like many similar threads before it.

The question does get asked, Sport or Off Road?

Another option is to just dig a little deeper and get a Pro.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

I purchased my truck (special ordered) without even driving any model. Did lots of research online and talked to a few people that had tacomas before. Went and sat in a Sport, limited and OR at the dealership. Wanted Quicksand with all the bells and whistles since I was buying new (wanted what I want and not someone else). Finally test drove a limited about 2 weeks before my truck got to the dealer. Have had it now for about 5 months and love it. Have done a ton of mods already too.

Yeah my ins went up because the value of the truck was so much more than the Dodge Dart I traded it for. Payments went up, Ins went up, then my wife’s blood pressure went up. I about became a statistic that evening!

I just struggled with this decision myself and ended up pulling the trigger on Thursday. I went with the off road flavor (premium and tech packages). The only thing that it is missing that I wanted was the non-functional hood scoop. I beat down my inner demons and went with function over form. No regrets at all. I'm going to throw an off road decal on the hood and call it good.

Being at peace with our own decisions is a bitch for sure, easy to look back and say “did make the right decision?”....answer is if your currently happy...then you made the right decision . That goes with all aspects of life in my opinion. Sometimes we reach out to re affirm we made a good decision...and hate it and question ourselves when others don’t agree or try and “tear” you down because you didn’t make the same choice as them...some do it aggressively or passively...either way let it be their issue not yours. Enjoy whatever you choose! It’s a Tacoma at the end of the day

I had the same dilemma when I got mine about a month ago. The OR handles just fine on the highway but the Sport doesn’t have a skid plate for when you do go off roading. That was the deciding factor for me. Good luck. Either way you’re getting a great ride.

If you buy the Sport, are you prepared to stare longingly at every Off Road that passes by? Wishing you could be that cool?

Went with a DCSB Sport about a week ago. Came from a fully loaded Volvo Polestar V60 - and haven’t looked back. The Volvo had a factory Ohlins Coilover suspension - so - was stiff - so going to the truck was no biggie in the stiffness department.

A somewhat local dealer had the Sport in the color I wanted - and I wasn’t willing to pay the extra cash for a limited or the upgrade package to get leather - so worked out perfect. Debadged her the day I got home and love it. The OR options didn’t seem to make sense to me since realistically it won’t be off roaded much at all.

I go off road maybe one to four times per year. The rest of the time it is paved road driving. But to me, if the off road features keep me from having to be towed from way off road just once, it is more than worth it.

Parents bought a '17 Sport. I bought an '18 off road. Driven both a lot. Both are very good. The Sport gets better MPGs and probably looks cooler with the scoop. I actually like the ride better in the off road. And the OR has Bilstein shocks which I really like. Plus the locker and 4x4 toys...

Otherwords, drive both and just see which one you like the best. Both are great trucks.
