My engine has a slight valvetrain noise as do many other Tacoma owners and it helps quite a bit. A tip learned from a friend. It works great especially in colder weather. I use it in my classic car also as it has quieted that engine as well.

It's been a while since I've seen a "what oil" thread...

Just change your oil regularly. It honestly doesn't really matter what kind you put in despite what the Mobile 1, Royal Purple, and Pensoil commercials tell you. Just change it.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
I run a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer and around 4.5 quarts of Mobil 1 High milage full synthetic 5w30.

I am going to try this now. I have always wondered about the lucas oil additive stuff. Ever since I replaced my cylinder head, there has been a less-than-appealing "clicking" noise from the upper valvetrain. (which is apparently common in these trucks)

I use mobile 1 synthetic and change it every 5k miles.. which is probably overkill because it comes out golden like when it went in.

I change the K&N oil filter every 10k miles.. so every other oil change..

I put in 5 3/4 every time.. not sure how much the filter takes up (obvsisply would displace some each interval) but seems ok at 5 3/4 with previous oil filter or new filter

Joe, are you using the higher priced Amsoil "Signature" or std Synthetic?

It does that because it vastly increases the oils viscosity. The stuff is thicker than cold maple syrup. You may as well just run a thicker oil.

I feel if Toyota meant for us to run the oil stabilizer, they’d tell us to add it.

I use Walmart supertec oil. Not a single person in this thread can actually tell any performance difference by changing brand or type of oil. If they think they can it is strictly placibo effect

One thing I noticed is when I converted from conventional oil to synthetic oil around 70k, I changed the oil 2,000 miles later, 3,000 miles later, and then 5,000 miles after that.. the synthetic oil was dirtier the first few oil changes then how it looks now (from current 5,000 -7,000 mileage intervals)
This leads me to believe the synthetic oil actually helped purge/clean the inside of the motor.

This is also where the myth that syn oil causes leaks comes from. It cleans out gunk that may be plugging a whole that would otherwise be leaking.

That stuff has the worst cold flow of any major brand oil when the weather dips down.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I use Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-30 for better cold weather starts, a Fram Tough Guard 3600 filter so I can dump all 6 quarts in. I have having an opened half quart laying around after a change. The 3600 is about 4" longer than the 3614 that it calls for and has the same thread, bypass setting and everything so it's not harming anything.
I love Mobil 1 and have used it for years without a single problem, and it's $30 a change if I buy the oil at Walmart and $6 for the filter. I change at 7500 miles or every 6 months, once in the spring and once in the fall. I change it myself so I make sure to do it while it's nice out, don't trust the lube jockeys at those 10 minute places to touch my truck, too many horror stories!

I’d stop using a Fram filter. Do some research on those things

Toyota sells their OEM filters on Amazon, a case of 5 for $27 (free shipping for Prime members)
    Thats all I use now.
