Volk racing TE 37 on my tacoma

So my wheels are coming in shortly and I wanted to get everyone's opinion on TPMS sensors. I'd prefer to keep the stock ones with the stock wheels and tires. My friend can program aftermarket ones for me.

Has anyone used the

$8 Dorman 974-033 Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Sensor Compatible with Select Models

Dorman 974-033 replacement sensors with Volk Racing wheels? They are about 1/3 of the cost of OEM ones. If not, what did you use?

 

Planning to get my te37xs mounted next week. +0 offset. Anybody running these have to get longer wheel studs or were the stock ones long enough to safely mount?

I am installing longer studs. With the Ray lugs I can get ~5.8 turns of thread engagement. With the 12x1.5 studs we have 6.5 turns is recommended. Personally I would do a test fit with your wheels and lugs.

 

I installed ARP extended studs for mine. Wasn’t getting as much thread engagement as I liked.

Use your stock sensors.. Those Dorman always have problems..

Get my special order OG center caps. ^^^ I don’t like the new center caps. Doesn’t match the smooth lines of the wheels to me.

 

All this talk about the stud length not being long enough has me a bit concerned but also skeptical.

How can there be 40 pages on this thread of people with these wheels and only 2 are going to extended studs with the TE37X and Rays lugs? This size and offset were made specifically for this truck. Is this seriously an issue?

I would like to know about this as well. As stated just a few people have been talking about the thread engagement issues and it is a bit concerning. Hopefully others can chime in!

Are you getting 6.5 turns of thread engagement? Mine looks the same but with the same lugs I am getting less than 6.

I put 5mm longer studs on the front today and will do the rear tomorrow. The will give me an additional 3.33 turns. In my opinion with what I spent on these wheels it is not worth the chance of a wheel coming off on the freeway.

This is a common problem on our trucks when aftermarket wheels are installed. Toyota uses really short studs. Most can get around it using extended thread lugs. These won't work with the Volk's.

Eta. With 6 turns it is only getting 9mm of thread engagement. This is less than 3/8".

 

For anybody looking for another source of hub centric rings I got mine from US Wheel Adapters today. They are custom and do cost more than other options but do come in black. The rings fit perfect, almost like they were made for these wheels. They are a snug but not too tight of a fit. I got them with a 112mm outer and 106.1 inner dimension.

 

Thanks for the photos! That does look like the bare minimum or slightly under the recommended thread engagement. What was Toyota thinking using such short factory studs?!

Which studs did you end up going with and were they a pain to install? If you have a link that would be awesome.

 

Can someone get the ID dimension for the lug nut hole? Why can't we use a shank style lug nut like the stock ones to get more thread engagement?

 

I got these http://wheeladapter.com/wheel_studs.php. They are actually 1" longer than stock so I cut them down. I decided on making them 5mm longer so I could still use the stock wheels/lugs and so the install would be user. There is only so much room behind the hubs and didn't want mess with backing plate or the rear axle. I also did that find that H&R makes 5mm, 15mm and 20mm longer studs. http://www.hrsprings.com/applications/studs

The install is pretty easy. Popped the old ones out with a ball joint press and installed the new ones with the lug/washer method. I bought a stud installer but it would not fit as it hit the hub. An impact is probably mandatory. The actual stud install for the front took less than an hour.

 

They are 0.585". We tried some Gorilla extended thread lugs at the shop but they did not fit. Similar to below.
