Pay load increase and lift kit suggestions.

Heavy kit is 7 leafs (needs avg 600lbs running payload to feel optimal)

Medium kit is 6 leafs with 3rd from top leaf removed (avg 100-300 running weight)

Light kit is 5 leafs (avg 0-150lbs running weight)

 

I’m still not understanding the legally part. I know the OEM parts are puny on these stock trucks

 

Why do you suggest Bilsteins over OME? You have to preload the spring on the bilsteins to get the same lift out of the OME shocks. Preload isn’t good over the life of components. Been there done that

For the record. If I was to buy Bilsteins they would be the 8112’s

 

Im not very car savvy so a lot of that I’m not familiar with. Haha. But I was just looking at the ones speysquatch was talking about. Would those not work? And they’re within my budget.

 

Are you going to be off-roading? Trails, snow, rain? The OME shocks are stiffer on the road but handle great with weight. Just trying to understand your application of the vehicle

 

I mostly do road trips with occasional off-road. I’m ok with it being stiffer if it means not bottoming out or having to be very careful off-road. I limit off-road right now because of the weight problem

I think your ride will be cherry with the medium kit. The front will feel very stiff for a while until it breaks in. I have a half bumper with winch and that weighs 130lbs. You may want to see if they will give you the light springs instead of the medium springs for the front instead. They are pretty knowledgeable at Lowrange so I would check with them first. Marie at Headstrong Off-road is also another good source of knowledge

 

With all the weight of the rear he needs the HD leaf pack.

 

Wow, it's amazing the difference the lift made to looks and stance of this truck. That is exactly what I need to do to my truck. I have a Leer Camper shell on it currently and the added weight gives it a very level stance that I don't care for. I think your truck looks amazing with the lift installed!

You bet man. Ask the right people and do enough research. For your budget you really can’t go wrong with OME. They have been developing suspension for Toyota for 60 years (mainly land cruisers). They test all their stuff in the Australian outback

You also may want to consider getting 2-3 degree shims for the rear instead of doing the carrier bearing drop that he OME kits come with. I recommend the Toytec 3 degree shims. You can see them between the axle and the leafs on my truck in this pic. This will avoid driveline vibes by keeping your operations angles of the pinion and carrier bearing u joint the most optimal

 

How much more weight can I have than stock using the medium.

How much does the payload increase using the medium. The heavy seems nice but 600lbs is a lot. I’ll be close to 600 with my setup and if I have other people in my car it’ll be pretty much dead on 6

I’ve ran 450 lbs and it rode fine I would assume 600 wouldn’t be that much different. Sag was minimal. Still had 6-7” before leafs hit the stock bump stop

 

The manufacturer sets the payload man. All you are doing is controlling sag.
If you truly want to increase payload you need to do lots of calculations, increase your braking surfaces, change gearing and THEN worry about sag.

 

You are not increasing load carrying capacity or payload! You are only controlling sag, which is only a tiny piece of actually increasing true payload.

 

I see what you mean. Yes, agreed I did notice a hit on the breaks with the bed full. Wish the big break kit wasn’t so dang expensive

 

I went with a single Dever AAL and 5100’s with stock coils in front- added 1.5” or so all around. It works very well for us, but more recently, after our recent Washington and Oregon trip this summer, I also added Firestone air springs mounted with Daystar air spring craddles (to preserve our offroading rear axle flex) in order to be able to handle all of my different loads. This pic is from our recent trip, I was fully self-contained with almost 10-days worth of provisions, and a lot of extra weight including platform bed, RTT, Bikes, 10gals of gas and water, and two folding double sea kayaks. The inside of the shell was loaded to the ceiling, we sleapt in the RTT. I also tow a travel trailer with it, and collect a lot of minerals and rocks on desert trips. So after our trip, I decided to add air shocks because having the ability to adjust with them would be perfect for us.

This was before the Firestones, just the one Dakar plus Overload spring. It did pretty good, but I was still a bit too low for some places when loaded like this.
