Question... What do you guys do the first week or two of bow season? Do you shoot does or just wait for bucks?

Just curious so I figured I would ask you guys. I normally try and shoot at least one doe or two in the first few sits just to keep my skills up and get some meat.

Don’t quote me on it but during the first two weeks of the zone I hunt in, you have to harvest a doe before you harvest a buck. So yea I try to take doe for yummy beef jerky and venison burgers

I wait for buck first, doe comes later if I dont get a good buck. BUT I only get one tag so Im kinda selective not to shoot a doe the first part of bow season...

In the seasons we choose to shoot does, we will usually shoot them very early in the season. In our opinion once the riut hits we don’t want to take pregnant females that could potentially have great offspring and to help keep the herds strong for years to come.

Totally 100% agree. If I shoot one or two it’s in the first week or two when it’s harder to catch the bucks slipping anyway. I won’t shoot any does after the beginning until late season.

For those of you who use crossbows, does anybody have luck using fixed broad heads or is it impossible. I’ve heard and seen good things about ramcat but I’ve only used spitfire maxx and thunderwave (o-ring) mechanicals

I don’t have a X-bow, but just like any bow as long as you get it sighted in and shooting consistent you should be good to go. Ramcats have good reviews and I’m sure they would do great. You just gotta make sure they hit where you are aiming.

My wife has only ever used fixed broadheads in her crossbow. And she’s in Ohio big buck book twice. Currently running G5 strikers

I shoot a doe or two be fore Oct. 20th or so. Then wait on bucks. Never shoot does or hunt in my best buck spots until the first really good cold front. Usually very late Oct or early Nov. My favorite day has always been Nov 4. After about Dec 15, back to doe shooting.

Good strategy for sure. Her in VA I’ve had good luck around Nov 14. We have milder weather than the Midwest at least in these recent years.

    1. I shoot one pin sighted in a little high at 20. Good to 35 or so.
    2. I have the same quiver mounting bracket on the arm of my tree stand that I have on my bow. Hang my quiver there.
    3. I have a bench in my shop I lay my bow on. Shoot one arrow, set bow down, retrieve arrow, start over
    Good questions!
