Well shit! In addition to my dog getting sprayed by a skunk last night, I just threw down $817 on a 12000# warn winch. I was dove hunting today and nothing was flying due to the monsoon we had last night. I decided to try the third cattle tank of the day and I found a group of fellow outdoor enthusiasts who were trying to recover a full sized Chevy on 37" mud terrains from the mud in the tank. They had 3 trucks and not a fucking winch in sight! So, I do the neighbourly thing and proceed to lend a hand. Long story short, I ended up using their flatbed dually as an anchor and my snatch block to double the winch line back to my truck. I got him pulled about 20' (3' from good dirt and traction at this point) when my smittybilt xrc8 just went dead on me. It just took a shit and wouldn't start back up after that. I can't really blame the winch because I was abusing the hell out of it. The Chevy was on the frame and the 37's were almost completely burried in mud. We'd already stopped once to clear the mud out of the wheel wells and out from in front of the bumper and tires so I was asking alot from an 8000 lb winch, but having said that, I'll be fucked if I'm gonna have that happen when I'm alone and a 10 mile hike from rescue. Lesson learned, don't cheap out on recovery gear! What a fucking weekend

That's what I was thinking. I couldn't get smittybilt on the phone today due to the holiday. Me and the wife talked and decided that it is not worth the chance of that happening when I REALLY need it to work. I got lucky it burned up when I wasn't in serious trouble and the money is not a valid issue when it comes to getting back home safe. Apparently smittybilt winches only have a 20% duty cycle. Warn is 100%. There's a reason warn is reguarded as #1 in the world. If the Smitty can be repaired, I'm thinking of doing a hitch mounting plate and using it as a reverse winch if that's ever needed.

That's good to hear. So often you get huge prices attached to brand names for no other reason than that name itself, but I feel like this is different. You don't get a stellar rep. as a winch manufacturer if your shit breaks frequently. When I was building my truck I was younger, single and was looking at price tags. Several years, a wife and two additional kids later I have learned to think in terms of the long haul and making sure I make it home to my family, reguardless of the pricetag attached to it. Like I said earlier, I can't blame the Smitty for taking a shit, considering what I was doing to it, but it was still a lesson learned the easy way and I listened. Haha
