What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I am debating just replacing that oiled cone filter with a dry AFE filter. It should fit theoretically.

I’ve never cleaned it before. Maybe it could be that.

 

So I’d like some opinions here. My crankshaft has a slight wobble. It’s hardly noticeable without slow motion. But it irritates me so much and makes me wonder if it’s wearing components faster. It’s more than likely the main bearing. Possibly from overtiggtened belts at one time. To fix this I would have to pull the motor.

It is possible to change a crank bearing without removing a motor but since the bearing cap is one piece on the 5vz-fe the weight of the crank, rods, and pistons would be on the front/rear seals And could damage them. But it might be worth it to just replace the bearing and seals instead of pulling the motor. But I’m that case the transmission has to come out enough to replace that seal. Either way it would be a huge PITA.

FYI. This is not a result of a loose pulley. And it’s not a result of using a lightweight pulley. It was more noticeable with the stock balancer. And the stock balancer was not damaged in any way.

I would take that pulley off an chuck it in the garbage. Even if you think it's straight it's ruining your crank shaft and bearings. There's a reason why stock crank pulleys are heavy and ugly and it's not because they wanted to waste a bunch of material.

 

Did some scouting this weekend...
We didn't get to camp in our normal spot. But we made a nice cozy camp in the next spot up the road.

Did some more hiking/scouting. Found an over look of our hunting grounds from a new perspective.

Annnnnd... me thinks there's a bear in these woods. <excited face>

Maybe. But it does seem to run better and reduce the wobble. And I’ve read this argument before. But I can’t imagine that both URD and LCE would be in the business of building motors and knowingly sell them for daily drivers if they would cause damage. I also can’t find a single case of any said damage on a 5VZ from a URD crank. People have been running them for years. But you may be right. Only time will tell.

 

Doesn't matter. One set of tracks (meaning not a sow with cubs) and by the look of the tracks he's legal size... if I see him after 9/15, he's sausage in my freezer.

Since they banned hound hunting we haven't filled the recommended tag quota once... bears are getting too overpopulated. A legal bear is a done deal.

I'm guessing they won't let you bait them? That's the way everyone here hunts bear. Pretty hard to find them otherwise.

I stumbled onto a bear den last winter in Wyoming last winter.

 

Correct... No bait, no dogs. That's why we've fallen short of the tag quota every year for the past 6 years.

And not just a little short. Quota is normally right at 1700 State wide... and we've only been filling 800-900 on a good year. Bears are getting really overpopulated... and don't even get me started on the Lion overpopulation (banned Lion hunts in the mid 90s) There's at least 2 Lions in the area I hunt.

Bear season has been open in some areas (archery) for nearly a month. There have only been 56 tags filled

 

I'm not sure about using dogs with bear here. Everyone I know that bear hunts uses bait. I know guys that lion hunt with dogs.

 

Plated the frame and replaced the rusted out shock gusset with some 3/16ths plate. Still need to paint it

 

We’ve wandered into Wyoming a few times, down by Minnies Gap.

I spent a lot of time over state lines this winter trapping too.

 

Just read the abbreviated Wyoming Bear regs. Looks like hounds are no go for bear in Wyoming.

Your about a month ahead of me. Have all the stuff just need to get after it. How's the ride? Daystar cradles work good?

 

I pumped them up to about 10 psig, which raised the rear about 1/2" and the ride was still good. It was a little stiffer, but not uncomfortable. I jacked it up on stands and cycled the suspension, the airbags settled into the cradles perfectly.
I still need to install my u-bolt flip kit (not sure if this will work with the air bags, will wait and see) and shock relocation kit as well and then I should be done with the rear suspension for a while.

 

Just a note, if you do the washer thing, make sure they are hardened washers. Cheap washers (I would say Chinese, but not all Chinese steel is cheap, and not all cheap steel is Chinese) will compress and remove the tension from the bolt, allowing the bolts to vibrate loose, which would make for far more excitement than you want.

Of course, Blue loctite is a must on something like this. Red if you don't want to ever disassemble it again without the Blue Wrench.. If you REALLY want to do it right, use a lockwasher, as well.

EDIT: Lowe's is a good source for the washers, if you need just a few and need them now. Get the Grade-8, gold zinc (gold zinc is more corrosion-resistant than the silver zinc). By nature of being Gr8, they are hardened.

If you have time to wait, boltdepot.com is a good source. They ship fast, too- I usually get an order in two business days.

 

I used them on my SAS S10, when I went air over leaf. They worked very well.
