Chopping exhaust pipe - what to expect

I'm wanting to chop my exhaust pipe such that it's hidden from view and safe from damage. I'm wanting to cut it basically at the point where it disappears from view and heads up and over the rear axle.

Anyone done this before? How's it going to sound?

 

it should be fine and it shouldnt change the sound any if your still running stock exhaust.

 

I did this when I put in my new muffler. Its fine.

 

It will make it a little louder do to shorter piping. I just did mine the other day and love it! I'll take a video of it tomorrow or something

I chopped my stock exhaust right behind the rear axle. Did it with a hack-saw, and took way too long.... haha. Use a Sawzall if you have one. I noticed a very slight increase in tone when idling and at low rpms, but not nearly enough to be a drone. Can't hear it at all at highway speed or when accelerating hard.

 

Here is what I ended up with for now, Really didn't change the sound at all. I will most likely cut it where the tail turns down after the axle when I do a rear bumper and remount the spare tire.

 

I am running this same setup (with a v6). Oddly enough, before I chopped the exhaust, I had a bad drone at 1500 RPM's. Others who had the magnaflow dumped said they had no such drone.

Cutting my tailpipe off changed the resonance frequency enough to cure my problem. Looks better too.

 

I have a drone just below the 1500 RPM mark. I wonder if there is anything else besides irreversibly cutting I can do to remedy the drone. Any thoughts?

 

I just took my muffler off. Now its LOUD!

 

I cut it behind the heat sheild where it was still going down, but had a touch of turn towards the back.

 

U took ur muffler off? That's bad for the engine, what happened to ur flowmaster

 

Yeah. I took it off because I'm prepping it to get it welded on.

But its not that bad. The ECU just gives a richer fuel mixture due to the same loss of back pressure.

There's maybe a 3* increase on the Engine Temp gauge so nothing to be too worried over.

Me taking off my muffler is no different than the guys at the high school that have straight pipes running from their Headers to the end of the piping (tips).

Sure there's maybe a little less torque, but nothing I can feel. It still has the same get-up and a really nice back-off....

Perhaps a resonater? I have a dynomax, it's dumped before the axle,it's has a drone but doesn't bother me,it's not a loud muffler.

 

i love dump style exhaust for trucks...its a way cleaner setup + like most mentioned it will keep the exhaust from getting pinched or crimped when off roading...

but because the exhaust is facing down under the bed it usually resonates a lot more...making the sound a little louder then normal...but i like it that way...

 

Has anybody had any issues with a dumped exhaust and the spare getting damaged?
