Can I put a standard ground tent on KB Voodoo Bars or the OEM tonneau cover?

Planning a trip this weekend to Corolla, NC to do some off-roading on the beach. Me and the girl are planning to stay about 2 nights and rather than buy a $1500+ RTT, I want to test out a camping trip before I drop that kinda dough.

So will a standard ground tent work on top of the KB Voodoo Bars or on top of the OEM tonneau cover?

I could definitely just put the tent on the ground, but I am considering either using the ground tent on top of the bars or OEM tonneau, or throwing an air mattress in the bed and buying a canopy to put over top the truck bed.

Any expert opinions on this? I don’t know what the tonneau is rated for weight wise, but I’m about 170lbs and she is about 100lbs...

First, I love your threads. Have since you started posting.

Second, does your groundtent have a solid floor? Do any ground tents? How can it support itself on the bars?

Third, what do you mean by "canopy over the top of the truck"?

Fourth, I would think that sleepign on tonneau cover would be risky. A lot of weight right at one of the joints might break it. If you slept lengthwise with the truck... maybe you'll be ok. but how are you going to strap the tent down so it doesn't blow off the truck?

Fifth, why even think about a groundtent on your truck? Can't you just put it on the ground at the beach?

    Sixth, jesus h. christ.

I mean you probably could if you don't mind the fact that you'll be sleeping on a few very widly-placed bars instead of a solid floor, and also there's no real good way to attach your ground tent to the rack. it'd be like sleeping on top of the joists of an undecked attic. It's technically possible, if impressively stupid

are you seriously that desperate for instagram likes that you're just going to pretend to have an RTT when you have a perfectly functional normal-ass tent?

    My apologies :hattip:

I just was trying to figure out how to sleep off the ground. Apparently this is not something I should have even thought of.
