Just came across this video on YouTube, not sure if any of yall have seen it yet or not, pretty interesting comparison video of the Colorado ZR2, TRD-Offroad, TRD-Pro, JK-U, and JL-U... I mean, it was a slightly unfair comparison considering the JK/JL had 35+ tires, disconnecting sway bars, better suspension, and front locking diffs... Where as the tacos were relatively bone-stock.

    Thoughts?

    Exactly my first thoughts.

You want a purely off-road toy that's a miserable, impractical daily ride that will leave you stranded every second day? You buy a Jeep.

You want a vehicle that's reasonably capable off-road, while maintaining great reliability and daily usability, you buy a Tacoma.

    End of "battle."

There is no battle. Jeeps are a novelty, Toyota pickups are off road utility vehicles.

I think they need to put the $$$ in in the builds. I think knowing base price vs total spent really helps in comparisons. Though no one really puts it in. If they put the white taco vs grey taco costs, you would see how much the tires make a difference.

Im gonna do front and rear ARB's which would put traction closer to cost of that JL rubi.

    Yep, every damn day.
Here's the way I look at it:
If I had to choose between a new Tacoma or Jeep to go up a hard mountain trail to rescue my kids from mean people like Boris and Natasha, then I choose the Jeep. Every other situation I choose the Tacoma. The Jeep has to be brand new though.

It's not a very scientific test, is it @ferntr33? Comparing cost and having the same driver or at least having drivers with the same experience would have been better. I run with some pretty good drivers in my club and my guess is they could take a stock anything and run circles around a built anything with a novice behind the wheel. All the extra stuff makes a mediocre driver seem better on relatively non-challenging trails.

This video really shows skill is more important than what vehicle you drive. The driver of the trd pro was such a hack. You should also note the white tacos don't have real AT tires. I think it says something about how well equipped the ZR2 comes from the factory. Dare I say the tacoma is a more capable platform, however what the trd pro offers in comparison to the zr2 is pathetic. No front locker, no AT tires, no sliders etc. Main problem with the f150 is the size. Just yesterday I was following an f 150, equipped similarly to the one in the video, down guanella pass and it struggled over obstacles the taco breezed through. I don't care how capable jeeps are, they are terrible vehicles.

The Taco will take you most places well. On road or easy trails. The ifs, leaf springs, and long ass wheelbase despite your build severely limits you. Also the sheet metal on the Taco is beer can thin. As a runner the taco is boss. Off-road I can take a stock sport jk more places anyone with a worked out Taco can. Just not a good platform for trails. Again I'm on the east coast where they're muddy, rooted, and jagged rocky technical stuff. I've gotten my taco into places that make you pucker bad, in a Jeep not so much. Taco will beat the jeep in reliability. But offroad, jeep.

I miss the solid front axle of jeep and the parts availability and pricing. Aftermarket tacoma parts are double the ones for jeeps.

Very cool video, however I know I can fit a whole bull elk (gutted but whole, not quartered) squished into the back of my Toyota short bed, not sure how I’d do that with a Jeep. It may not look pretty but I can do it. :)

At 12:21, one can see the rear shocks of the ZR2 touching the ground/rocks. GM makes great trucks, but this rear shock placement seems to be an issue in all their trucks. Why do they do that?

Otherwise, I'd say that the ZR2 is the best all-around off-road vehicle at the moment. Best in class tires, Best in class torque, best in class suspension, best in class braking, front and rear lockers, best in class infotainment, best-in-class daily drivability, Best-in-class towing, Best-in-class hauling.

I only meant you can get a base model and spend some money in it and it will perform the same if not better than a stock high end model. Locking an sr5 vs TRD pro. Of course driver skill makes a big difference . . .

Seriously, 98TJ with 33's on 3" lift was about $2k total. And it came with steel bumpers from the factory. Winch bolted straight to bumper . . . Now I see $3.5k 4runner bumpers?!?

To me Jeeps are more easily modified but are not reliable. I've owned them before & always broke when I went to do something fun. I suppose if the Jeep was so very highly modified to the point where it wasn't even a Jeep anymore then I might actually enjoy having one again! I'll just save myself the time & money & just stick with the Tacoma
