I am not familiar with the specifics of the Ecoboost or turbocharged cars in general. But I would imagine that a Factory turbo system has an ECU controlled waste-gate, and of course a knock-sensor+ECU controlled timing. They can change the boost and timing when different fuels are used.

OV tune is a sophisticated tuning operation, but I have doubts about whether they can program the Stock Tacoma ECU to control a waste-gate. I don't know if that is even possible.

For sure. I am no expert on what is going on with the 2.7L ecoboost as the vehicle is a work truck I am given to drive, so it is much more of an “appliance” in my life than my Taco. I just put 87 in it and drive it like you would a work truck, and it behaves just fine.

It may not be a matter of not being able to swing the 93, but just living somewhere the pumps only go to 91. I know around me the closest place I can get 93 or better is the track

Is there really a debate? Synthetic is the only option for 0W-20.

There will be no 87 octane tune option for this kit.
Remember, there is a big difference in static compression ratio between the ecoboost and the 2GR-FKS.

The stock Tacoma ECU cannot control a wastegate, but we have our MAFT box that can do all sorts of stuff :)

Also, yes you can run 87 octane in the ecoboost, but you severely hinder it's performance and bring yourself to a thin margin before detonation becomes a serious issue. The ECU then has to do various things like restrict throttle, cut out ignition, dump fuel, lower boost.

It is simply not safe to attempt 87 on this truck with boost. It has a hard enough time with 87 with no boost at all due to the way the ignition strategy is.

I am super excited for this.
Already working with the Turbocharger manufacture to see what we can do. Definitely want to TT a Tundra next.

    Matt:

Assuming stock a Tacoma is about 220 to 230 whp, how reliable will +350whp be? That is a significant increase. Can a stock 2GR-FKS handle that or are those numbers for the more "advanced" kits where internals are swapped out? Also will the transmission reliably handle the power?

My test truck will take the beating to see how much power can reliably be held, but 350whp does not scare me at all with this engine. I will also be pushing it much further. 12psi to get started..
Remember this same engine is in the Camry making "30hp" more and revving and extra 700 rpm. Our engine is an electronically neutered version of the 2GR-FKS

Is it neutered only to help long term reliability or are there other reasons you think?

I don't see it as a reliability issue more as a utility thing. What benefit is there to buying a 300hp truck if you get 300hp at damn near 7000 rpm.
Having a truck that has a rev limiter @6700 is kind of pointless, and selling a truck that quotes 300hp @ 6700 is also a hard sell I think.

the same engine in the camry revs higher and makes more, in the lexus IS350, GS350, revs higher and makes more. Nothing in the ECU is different.

So, if a 2GR-FSE makes 400whp+ @ 7psi, and you are pushing this 2GR to 12 psi, that’s probably in the neighborhood of 450-500whp?

I wish I had a 35 gallon fuel tank for the terrible fuel economy I'd be getting with that kind of power :(

They don’t have the adapter plates ready for the 2018+ Tacoma’s yet either.

I’ve been checking in every month to see if they are ready yet.

Really need that extra fuel for some piece of mind.

    On a different note,
Where should I look for springs to handle the extra weight of all of my armor and extra gas, and equipment?

Yeah, there's good reasons Toyota is well known as one of the best engine builders out there. They might not be flashy, but they're pretty much always incredibly over-engineered for their intended purpose and as a result respond relatively well to modifications for power as long as the running conditions of the motor have not noticably changed. I trust that the injectors and other fuel system upgrades @OVTune has planned along with his noted tuning abilities will get us a reliable turbo platform, coupled with the fact that he's been talking relatively conservative turbo setups as far as I can tell. I for one can't wait to see the final result... My whole build has been leading up the moment boost becomes readily available :burnrubber:

My guess would be at 2500 rpm you're talking double the power output we have now. I would guess a V6 taco is making about 120hp at 2500 currently, I think 250hp at 2500 rpm is achievable, judging based on my experience with twin turbo 4 cylinder setup in the Range Rover evoque and twin turbo 6 cylinder in the Ford explorer sport 3.5 ecoboost. Both are absolute rockets from about 2200 rpm on though on the range rovers larger turbos there is a noticeable lag until then, but as Matt mentioned you'd be hard pressed to find a smaller turbo than the 3.5 ecoboost ones and that thing can move in a straight line

One thing to consider from your post is that the Explorer although a bit heavier is also AWD. One issue is going to be with the lightness of our truck’s rear ends.

You would think it would make them WAY faster overall (and in some aspects it will), but with a shitload of power with a light rear end the traction can also be an issue. I know talking about traction breaking in a Taco is funny, but at 400 hp it came definitely come into play when you stomp it for sure.

I am really wanting to see what Mat has as far as numbers, overall specs, and videos of an actual truck performing in real time to give us a legit big picture of what we are going to be getting.
