Rear Ended - Frame Bent

I have an 06 double cab 4 x 4 and was rear-ended two days ago. I am fine. I went under the truck tonight and noticed that the frame is bent on the drivers side near where the class III hitch bracket mounts.

Is this frame repairable ? If so how ?

 

I had a 2006 that was rear ended and the frame was bent, my insurance company totaled it. I did not have my ball mount in either. They were going to put the body on a new frame, which was going to cost like $15k. Go through your insurance company, not the other drivers. It's called subregation. They can repair the frame, but they can also put your body on a new frame.

Photos would be awesome. Bent frames have gremlins in my limited experience- They aren't every "right" again.

So I'd want to totaled or the frame replaced unless it is the most minor of bends.

 

I'm sure you got a police report, and called the insurance company right?

 

I had an 08 DC 4x4 and got hit on the passenger front side on the freeway which put me into the median at about 45mph. My frame was bent so my insuarance company (allstate) replaced the frame ( it cost 4k). But you have to push the repair shop ( toyota of poway did mine) to replace the frame and not straighten it.

 

Yea, frame bent should be a totaled truck or replacement frame. Pulling/cut n weld is never the same. Sucks, but glad you're alright.

 

this is why i miss my 2500hd. i got rearended my some ahole in a snow storm he had a little access cab first gen base model 5 lug. He totaled his truck and scratched a little chrome off my ball and broke my 7 pin trailer bracket that was 60% rusted through anyway. Miss that truck...

 

You may also want to check the frame 'skew'. If you think the frame is bent, then its probably totally skewed also (not good).

Grab a couple strong magnets, some string, and fishing weights (so to speak).
The whole idea is to make two plumb-bobs.

Attach magnets to a corner of the truck somewhere and the other one at the opposite corner of the truck. Measure the distance. Repeat doing the opposite corners - making sure the plumb bobs are placed in the exact locations. Measure....

The measurements should be equal.... if they're not, the frame is twisted/skewed. Depending on your insurance company.... but usually, if the cost of a frame replacement PLUS all other costs is approx. 70% of the value of the vehicle = TOTALLED.

 

Everything was done by the book (police, ambulance, insurance).

My son is a mechanical engineer and he says no way they can bend the frame back.

Yeah...Concur with Janster. That frame is toast cause it's most likely out of square now.

 

there are different ways a frame can be damaged, a diamond or body gaps being off is just some time on the frame machine and you'll be fine, kinked frame rail= replaced frame rail, minor bends can be repaired.

It sounds like the frame is bent at the mounting bolts for the hitch, which could be just a simple repair. Check the bed gaps first. Without pics it is impossible to say if in needs a frame rail, frame time or simply some hammering out.

 

also there are places in the frame designed to be sectioned, you don't need a full frame replacement unless the damge is a kink beyond a sectionable area (too close to center of vehicle)
