If anyone cares i went to mavis last week and asked what they had in stock in 255/16 and he said "nothing but i could have em here tomorow" iasked what can u get & how much? Long story short, cooper st maxx 255 85 16 mounted, balanced ,tax(8.75%) disposal fee out the door $688. I had rims off so a lil less labor and lift time but still a great deal so go talk to them, they have a bit of leeway on price if they are cool

Okay, I have been reading this forum for years and have read through most of this thread. Looks like I am finally ready to start ordering lift parts and planning new tires.

    Quick info:
    2009 DCSB TRD OR
Stock TRD OR wheels with SpiderTrax 1.25" spacers (or might pull trigger on SCS F5... :goingcrazy:
Will be doing a full 3" OME lift with Dakar Leafs & Light Racing UCAs

So I am asking for a sanity check:
Any tire at 255/85-16 will have no problem fitting and most likely not rub at all?
If I decided to go 34x10.5-16 that would again fit fine and probably not rub?
NOTE: originally was planning to do CMC but if I don't have to then I won't

Not too sure about 3rd gen as lift is different. I believe that the 887s gave me a full 3 inches on 2nd gen, but it is my understanding that 888 is the 3rd gen equivalent. 888 would be more lift than you are looking for. Also, if you are going to stay at 2-2.5 you may be ok. Going to 3" with the 888 you really should look into aftermarket UCA for alignment and possibly clearance purposes at droop.

With that said I have read plenty of posts that say they clear 255's stock with 3rd gen. If that is the case, 2-2.5 should suffice.

Rubbing comes down to wheel/tire combo and alignment for the most part. If you get those in the sweet spot, you should be just fine.

Ive only been reading it for 6 months and I am planning to pull the trigger on the same lift from headstrong. After seeing so many different mixed results I have just told my self "If I have to trim ill trim and if I have to chop ill chop" hopefully i don't, but I am mentally preparing myself for it. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. Oh and I am for sure running skinny's!!

That's a good price. Hard to find just the tire for that.

From my understanding the lift wont effect whether the 255/85R16 will fit. The only thing that should impact that for the 3rd gen is if you are running spacers/wheels with different characteristics than the stock wheels (backspacing and what not). The skinnys with the stock OR wheel work because they fall in a sweet spot and don't rub on UCA or rub on cab mount. If you start going wider (tire or wheel) or adding spacers you change this sweet spot. Lifting I don't believe changes this. I have not lifted yet so, cannot speak form experience on this part.

Not sure if this has been discussed yet but I was wondering if there are any suggestions for a SKINNY spare? I have 285/75-16's but I want to store a similar diameter spare in the stock location, for clearance. I was thinking 255/80-17 or 255/75-17. What do you guys think?

Definitely going with 255/80-17 st maxx I had a wider version on my last Tacoma. I see a lot of people running them on stock off road wheels but I have a sport model. I’ve been doing some searching with no luck my question is the backspacing the same on the or wheels as the sport wheels on an 2018?

Gas mileage really suffered compared to the 265/75. Honestly, I think 265/75 is a good all around option for price, performance and gas mileage.

Gas would suffer because you have a taller and heavier tire right?

But 255/85-16 should be slightly better gas mileage than the more common 285/75-16 if you are wanting a 33" tire. Assuming I know what I am talking about. :notsure:

I know this thread is for offroad tires, but for those of us who spend most of our time on the road Michelin has it's Defender LTX M/S in skinny sizes.

235/85r16 and 255/75r17 are the two I saw. I'm looking to get a set of the r17s to replace my Wrangler SilentArmor tires of the same size. Kinda wish they were offered in 255/80r17 to fill the wheel wells a bit more now that I have a lift, but beggars can't be choosers.

Just curious If any one is running a 255/75/17? I think with a 2" lift it would be the perfect size.

That's an intriguing size but I wonder about how it looks aesthetically. The 80s make up for being skinny with being tall, the 75 is almost an inch shorter. But, you can get the Stt Maxx in a C load. I'd be hard pressed to pick a 255/75 over a 265/70 based solely on tire choices and odds of a shop having a replacement if you had a tire fail on the road.

255/75/17 was stock size on jeeps for a few years. Not too uncommon of a size a lot more options than 255/80/17 too.

I have not seen them on a tacoma, thats why I was asking. I agree it could be a hassle to find them. I was wondering about them in the interest of keeping weight down. I am pretty partial to my cooper's but they are heavy.
