MOD: A-Pillar RAM mount GPS/Phone holder

Ones through the windshield didn't come out very well, didn't post those up.

Yes. Those RAM mounts are awesome.
I don't think I have an extra of that type.

 

I also did this. Didn't want my phone right up against the wheel. Plus I'm able to position my phone to take video when I'm offroad.

 

The Scosche mounts seem really popular - any reason you chose that rather than RAM's magnetic mount option?

 

How did that end up working out for you? Why did you decide to use the Scosche magnet mount rather than RAM's own magnet PowerPlate II mount?

Same question as above? Scosche is popular, but why go between brands rather than doing everything with RAM?

 

Worked not so great with my iPhone 6s w/ Magpul case (the ribbed case was too thick). I now have a heavier iPhone X but my case has a thin plastic backing and the hold on the magnet is super strong.

As for why I went with Scosche, it's simply I didn't know Ram had a magnet that would work lol

 

Didn't even know Ram made magnetic stuff, but from doing 2 minutes of research, even the "small" mount looks massive compared to the Scosche and the adhesive plate is freaking huge. Absolutely no way I'd be able to put my phone case back on with that thing. It looks at least 4 mils thick (conveniently no specs on the RAM page, only "shipping weight".. how useful). With the scosche, I can stick the plate directly to my phone and put any phone case over that. The scosche plate is barely thicker than a piece of paper.

Btw not sure if the RAM base plate is an actual magnet... if it is, your phone's gonna stick to all sorts of metal shit. The Scosche base plate seems to be made of some sort of "only sticks to other Scosche mount" material.
It is not magnetic... yet it is.

Pulled back the GPS power cable, and ran it up into the A pillar. Made sure to follow the airbag wiring just in case. Hardest part was dremeling out the pillar cover to accommodate the right angle GPS plug. A regular micro USB plug would have taken less work.

I'll see how I like this on long drives, then figure out if I need a different RAM arm.

Used a low profile fuse tap for power, and ran it to the 4x4 fuse witch only supplies power when the ignition is on. Their is a convenient small bolt under the dash that I ran the ground wire to.

Hard Wired a power source and ran it up behind the a-piller for my ram mount.

 

So I got some of those paracord grab handles made by another member to replace the factory ones. With them being able to be moved out of the way it makes getting the phone in an optimum position a lot easier. Also able to use a shorter arm without interference issues.

Got mine done up as well, went for the usb plug so when I get a new phone with a different charging plug I dont have to change anything
