Just Installed a Powertrax No Slip AKA Lunchbox Locker in my 2nd gen

Eff that, if you're adding one get a Torsen. Or Truetrac. You don't want clutches cuz they all wear out

 

Probably not. I might buy a full axle but I'd end up pulling the 3rd member, rebuilding and working my mad science, then doing a 3rd member swap.

Actually I've been meaning to do some research on whether or not Toyota 86'es have the same ring and pinion dimensions as Tacos, in which case...
(obviously the axle housing is for independent rear suspension but if the internal guts are the same you've got a wide aftermarket to play around in)

 

I’m confused since 2nd and 3rd gens have different sized diffs. Would you modify your existing axle housing to fit the 3rd?

Also are you the guy who’s working on the AWD front diff thing? I’ve skimmed that thread. Impressive stuff.

 

Truetrac and Torsen are the same thing, helical torque biasing diffs.

The problem with torque biasing units is they need load on both wheels to do their biasing. You lift a wheel, SOL. A clutch LSD might at least get you somewhere if you can get it to partially lock up by spinning it.

Also diff clutch packs are a wear item, just like brake pads... I still want those!

And yeah that's a real crap comparison but I'm glad you keep brake pads on your truck

 

If I remember right only the Offroad and PRO have the newer size diff, everything else has the same old Toyota 8 inch rear.

Ah maybe. I’m not super well versed in some of the 3rd gen specifics. I just knew there’s a larger diff in there somewhere. Definitely make a thread sharing your experiences!

 

The MT and e-locker diffs of the 3rd gens have an 8.75" ring gear the axle is closer to that of a ford 8.8". From what I've been finding is the pinion is a little larger also where the bearings ride. I think I need to get a MT one and tear it down for science. The rest of the trucks have the exact same rear as the 2nd gens. Also the electronic locker in the 3rd gens actuates differently.

Who wants to donate to my 3rd gen MT rear axle science project. They run about 1g used

 

You can bolt in the whole axle assembly. Possibly need to run an adapter flange where the pinion meets the drive shaft.

I just installed the Harrop locker in my second gen. That's the same activation that the new TRD off-road and pro use. An internal electro magnetic lock ring. Just like an ARB except not pneumatic

 

Yep I've been researching them a lot. Eaton makes an electronic locker as well though not sure if they have one for yota and not sure the system they use. My only experience with lockers until now has been the mechanical type.

 

Eaton makes or at least designed the "Harrop" locker. Harrop is just the distributor. I love mine. Turns the rear into a spool at the click of a button. No air lines and compressors required.

But I would have gone with the whole TRD axle to get the 8.8" size advantage, and regeared the front to 4.30 if I could have found one.

 

Went wheeling today. Holy shit this locker is amazing. I've only ever wheeled with open diffs and it was a night and day difference. I was doing stuff I could have never done before. 0:20 in is where the flexy hill starts. Watch to the end of that clip because I get some nice wheel lift going.

Mine will do that too. I think it is where the shackle is rotating right where it is at horizontal and is more exemplified because of the shock being the limiting factor.

Yeah I'm not too worried about it. I'll just look and make sure nothing appears to be getting damaged and call it good. I hear noises all the time while articulating, and at least now I know what one is!
