they are compared frequently because both are fairly capable off-road in their stock format and have a huge following for mods to make them even more capable. if someone is wanting to off-road or appear to off-road, then these are the first 2 vehicles they look at. i'm not sure why everyone gets so shocked that they are compared all the time. it comes down to whether or not you want a capable truck or SUV and for me it was the truck just because it is more versatile for every day use, like hauling bikes in the bed and doing homeowner stuff (like loads of mulch and dirt and stuff). i really looked at a wrangler before I got my tacoma but would have had to spend at least another $500-1000 in accessories for a trailer and a tow hitch bike mount.

The OP was assuming everyone bought the Tacoma for off road capability.

The vast majority of truck owners don’t off road so thats not a consideration of purpose.

On road capability is why I bought a truck. I don’t care what it can do off road.

for off road capability, it makes complete sense to compare the 2.

It was a no brainer apple to oranges comparison. The Tacoma is foremost a truck that can also offroad.

The geep is an offroad rig, that can also be an suv for the frequent in-between trips to the shop.

Agreed. And two of the very few that are offered in manual transmission.

Funny that y'all are knocking Jeep's reliability. My wife and I have owned seven different Jeeps (one YJ, one TJ, two XJs, three JKs) and the only time any one of them required more than routine maintenance was when I did something stupid in/to it.

Our first '17 Tacoma, on the other hand, had to have the transmission swapped by the dealership due to a bad control module. Shit can happen with any make/model.

Same. I mean, it’s neat that my Tacoma is a good off roader, but the most off roading I ever do is go someplace where I have to park on the grass. I just don’t really need it.

Granted, I’m sure that the majority of Jeeps never leave the pavement, either.

People buy Jeeps for the same reason they buy Tacomas.

    Because its cool!!

Even if Jeep revamped and resurrected the Comanche, it would not get a SFA. There is no good reason to do so.
Comanche was a cool truck, but I'd rather see VW bring over the Amarok.

Thought about a Wrangler JK but wanted a bed, we do light offroading especially in snow quite a bit so the Tacoma has been great. Owned the Tacoma for 1.5 years now and selling to buy a GX470 and a small utility trailer for when I need it. GX is nicer than JK or Tacoma and good off road (landcruiser prado) that plus no truck payment will be great lol

Drove my FIL's JK last week, reminded me how much I don't miss owning one. I heard the JL is even more cramped than the JK so I'm good with my Taco, I really do miss the interior room and the power of my Ram but it was too big for the trails.

I'm not a Jeep hater by any means, but a guy I follow on YouTube recently live-streamed his Rubicon (2015?) burning to the ground. This led me down a shocking rabbit hole of disturbing Jeep fires ... never heard of it being an issue before, but it clearly is ... Chrysler states that the cause of these blazes is "inconclusive." Even new 2018s catch fire on their own.

Reliability wasn't really something I considered when I went with the taco over the Jeep. In addition to just wanting/needing a truck bed, the taco is a safer vehicle with more airbags. Side curtain airbags for the front seats are an option for the Wrangler and there is no option for rear airbags. And when I say it's an option, I mean you have to special order to get it and rarely will find one on the lot with it.

Fast driving into a headwind last Sat. in my 17' DCSB, I was reminded how terrible my 11' JKU Rubi. was when I was unfortunate enough to be going into a strong wind. I think it was a 3.8l/ 4 sp. in my 11' JK; it was not a good vehicle/ engine/ trans. combination, from what I read the later 3.8l/ 6 sp. (I think?) was much better. I assume the JL's with a more sloped windshield and hopefully better motor are better than the JK's. My 11' JK was great off road, but not the best as a daily driver. Some people think the Tacoma 3rd gen 3.5l is slow, maybe, but coming from my 11' JK, my mostly stock 3rd gen is much, much faster.

The new Jeep scrambler next year should offer a comparison. Solid front axles and all

Sold my 15 JKU WW edition for my Taco after a cylinder head failure at 45k miles. The Taco is far superior in almost every way. I don't wheel so it doesn't matter in that aspect.

Well me too . Traded 17 sr5 DCSB , 18500 miles key for key for new 18 Ram 1500 quad cab short bed tradesman 4x4 5.7 . I been in Toyota trucks since 1985 . Small camper , sxs and trailer , small boat all felt like I had to beat up on it to make 60 mph . Hated that feeling so , I swapped . I had my 96 Tacoma for 20+ years , same clutch and pulled all with it at same speed without feeling like I was having to hammer it all the time . The 17 was a Great truck but not for pulling anything very long . Toyota been darn good to me over the years , first complaint ever and it had to be with my retirement truck ! Bummer big time ! Ram makes 20 mpg on highway same as the Tacoma . I hope it holds up for the few years I hope to hold up myself .
