DIY Fumoto Valve on Oil Filter Cartridge

This mod is for adding a Fumoto Valve to the cartridge, makes draining it quick and easy.
Replaces and no longer need to remove/install the plug, plastic nipple and O-ring.​

Disassemble by flipping back the ear and pushing in/rotating the cone.
​

Lift the cone up and out, followed by the spring and then the valve.
Dispose of the valve, everything else will be reinstalled.

Machine off the raised lip.
Tap the thread all the way through, M20x1.5
​

Reinstall the spring and cone, flip the tab back down
​

Nipple version F-105N is not necessary, plain F-105 is probably best

What are the benefits of switching from a spin on to a cartridge on a 2.7?

 

I don’t have a video; many people add a Fumoto Valve to their oil pan to drain oil. This drains the oil before removing the oil cap- no mess.

It’s a very well put together mod, would probably look nice on my 2.7, but I would miss the disposable filter look, and I mastered the black art of “get a grocery bag and use it like a big glove to spin off the filter and then curse and scream when you realize there’s a hole in the bag” technique.

Definitely a cool mod for an annoying issue the 2TR surely has, would probably do it if the cost was lower. Doesn't bother me enough to spend that kind of coin.

 

I used to have an s2000 and this oil drain was popular with the exception of some people having issues with oil leaks afterwards. I appreciate your work on this mod for sure!, but you still have to take the filter off to change it anyways. I have free oil changes on my truck, once I start changing it myself, I may consider this option if necessary.

 

Absolutely none other than making a PAIN to change the oil. It is literally worthless lol
I have had both types of filters and the set up on the 2tr is 100000000x better for oil changes.

 

This thread is to show you how to make the 3.5L oil change easier.

Tons of people installed Fumoto Valves on their 2nd Gen oil pans, haven’t seen a thread yet about a leak.

Once you start changing your oil you’ll quickly recognize installing/removing the plastic drain nipple is a pain- you’ll have one less o-ring to install too.

 

I have been changing oil since I was 10. It is really not that difficult. now I will admit a drain valve would be nice, but that is one more place to leak that isn't work the effort.
I guess you haven't researched them very much if you haven't read about a leak. I wanted to do it and realized eh, the oil pan isn't hard to drain. The oil filter is, which you know what? Oh well, I don't change my oil THAT often to worry about needing to get a valve.

 

I have changed to fumoto valve on the drain pan and happy about it as it eliminates the use of drain plug + new gasket . Putting one on the cartridge canister does not serve any great purpose as the filter has to be opened for replacement anyways. Been searching for a filter with drain bolt for my Subaru, to no avail. Only ones I saw were sold in Japan for Mitsubishis.

 

One could just pop a quick hole in the filter, with a punch, and let it drain for a moment. But why do that when you’ve got holey bags.

 

That's a lot of work to drain a small filter. Pan yes but a filter...I dunno.

 

How many of you guys change your own 3.5L?

 

That's what I was using until this.

With that tool you still have to unscrew the bottom (oil does gets past the valve and needs to be cleaned up), screw/unscrew the tool in, replace the O-ring, screw the cover back on.

 

I wonder if there's any way to change to a standard spin on oil filter on the 3.5L. I really don't like the cartridge setup.
