Cold AC?

At the MOST half a kelvin. Maybe.


Also, take it to the dealer. Obviously this type of subjective back and forth isn’t going to do you any good.

 

Around 40-42 degrees Fahrenheit

 

We have the same thing on the 2nd gens. Some people say theirs is cold AF and others say it’s weak. It is my estimation that there is too much variation in the evaporator temperature sensors. Some read colder than they should so the A/C amplifier thinks the evaporator is cooler than it actually is.

My A/C was on the weak side. I evacuated and recharged the refrigerant. The machine pulled out EXACTLY how much refrigerant was supposed to be in there, so it wasn’t a refrigerant charge issue.

Once correct refrigerant level was verified, I measured temps at the center vent with a digital thermometer. Compressor comes on, cools to 50* and cycles off. Temp gets up to 54* and compressor comes back on. Rinse, repeat.

I found the correct resistance/temp chart for the evap temp sensor and added a 26.6k resistor across the evap temp sensor terminals to make the A/C amplifier see a hotter temp. Now the compressor comes on until 42* then cycles off at 46*. 8* colder is very noticeable. I may try a lower resistor value to see if I can get it into the high 30’s but I’m testing the 26.6k for a couple weeks to make sure everything continues to operate as correctly.

Be careful modifying the resistors, as you can push the compressor outside it's operating envelop and affect it's reliability.

COLD

 

I put a thermocoupler against my expansion valve and it’s reading .6K* taking it to the dealer, doesn’t seem cold enough

If this is true, then wow that is some lousy quality control from that supplier. On my old toyotas. The a/c apmplifier has a potentiometer to adjust the cycling tempereture. Not sure if these truck have that though l.

 

Never heard of this. Can you elaborate a bit more? Is this something that owners could possibly adjust?

 

I thought that screw was for idle speed compensation? Been a while though, maybe I’m misremembering.

Every Toyota I've ever owned has AC that is almost too cold.

My '17 manual truck is no different.

But on really hot days (90* +) it takes probably a good 10 miles of highway to reach peak cold.

It's all about air flow over that condensor.

It's a two year old post, but did you ever get this resolved? I live in PHX AZ and my AC is cool, not cold, unless I drive for several miles on the freeway. Definitely warmer when I stop at a light. Anyway, took to the dealer but they won't do the TSB because they said it only applies to Auto transmission trucks and mine is a manual. They couldn't find anything but discharged and recharged the AC a couple times. This was at the end of last summer, so it hasn't been until now that I've had to use the AC in a hot truck on hot days, and still just cool.

 

Did you ever get this TSB performed on your truck? Did it help? I'm guessing your truck is an automatic?
