How bad was that for the winch? Would you recommend a wireless or hardwired controller?

It's less Tacoma and more mod
I have a DD that eats more fuel than a V6 taco :/ Looking at getting another today though

Do your doors creek? Mine are really loud. It seams to be coming from the plastic lockout component. I have tried lubricating but the sound come back

I have the smittybuilt x2o 10 k with a wireless remote and the I really like it! makes winching a lot easier solo. I have a quick discount I plan to install on the leads to the batterys as well.( if i ever get to it. lol)

I am not an Electronic Engineer. That said, I have been screwing with this stuff for going on 40 years. So on the one hand, I don't know everything, but am well-versed in this stuff.

There are no semiconductors required in a relay. I've always been told they are "an electromagnetic switch which enables a high current circuit to be controlled by a low-current circuit".

I got curious, trying to find you more information (while not duplicating effort) and found this on Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relay
Apparently, there are solid-state relays as well. I honestly would have expected them to be called semiconductors or transistors. Learn something new every day. I am not as involved in component-level work and experimentation as I once was- but that gets us down another road entirely, and I do go on.

So yes, relays can use a semiconductor (in which case they are called a solid-state relay, and have no moving parts). They don't HAVE to have a semiconductor, and in such a case they have a contactor which is electromagnetically controlled (actually moves back and forth between two poles).

Relays can handle large loads, or small loads.. just depends on the characteristics they are built for.

Solenoids (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solenoid) are an electrical conductor wound into a coil, inducing a magnetic flux in a circuit (inductance also comes into play, and I am WAY too rusty on this stuff at this level to go into that ;) . In fact, a non-solid-state relay has a solenoid in it, to do the switching.

Winches have what are commonly called "solenoid packs" (aka the box you plug the control into) which are basically extremely heavy-duty relays. There well may be a defining characteristic between a solenoid and a relay which I am unaware of. With luck, a real Electrical Engineer may come along and explain, and we will both learn (in fact, I'm at work now, going to go see if I can find a buddy on the vehicle program and get his read on it- he's a real EET, I just hum the tune.. poorly!)

The term may also relate to any of a variety of electrical devices to convert energy into physical motion.

Pardon typos and possible incomplete sentences- I'm at work but not feeling at all well.

Since it wasn't engaged it was just free spinning. Not sure how long it was doing that for though. Only noticed it once I parked in my driveway and heard it. The wireless control I had was kind of delayed so it kind of made a precise movement a little difficult. I think most winches come with both if they have the wireless option.

If my control box would have been sealed better none of it would have been a problem.

Thoughts on next vehicle purchase being a 5th gen 4runner?

I really like the Limited's Full-Time 4wd.. I believe this is the same full time 4wd system found in the Land Cruiser and all previous generation land cruisers through the decades..
It's a shame Toyota only put it in their limited 4runner though.

Would certainly keep my 1st gen tacoma tho.

I wouldn't mind a 2nd gen double cab/manual trans since Toyota thought it wouldn't be a good idea to offer that combo on 1st gens.

ya that's what I mean, I'd get a 2nd gen one but only because they never offered the 1st gen in manual/double cab combo.

At least it's waaaaay better than a 3rd gen. I'd take a 2nd gen over a turd gen anyday. :)

I know what you mean, first 2nd gen I ever rode in was LT, it was nice but the interior had a bit of a cheap feel to me. But to be fair Toyotas in general have always felt that way to me but still my number one overall than any other Japanese import.

Door plate? Meaning behind the kick panel on the driver side? Pretty sure all rear wires run through there. I’ll just chase the wire when I get home thanks.

I’m guessing no one here has installed a reverse camera. It came free with the head unit I just got.
