    If you are going to compress air (millions of molecules), the probability of molecules bouncing off each other is 100%. In a confined and restricted space, when you to force air (at room temp) into it, they bounce off each other more frequently causing heat/dissipation. If you were to fill the tanks with cooler/cold air, you can fit more air into the tanks because the air molecules are more less likely to be moving.
    What the turbo does is compresses the air, then runs it thru the intercooler so that these molecules are compact and DENSE. It flows to the engine where they inject fuel with pressurized/cool air which will cause more efficient combustion. Running cooler air means the housing for the pistons wont be as hot. Therefore, your engine is running cooler and more efficient.

    Unless you are running an intercooler water sprayer, the air will not be colder than ambient, which is what goes into the cylinders with NA.

    I don't know anything about how a turbo works but would it delete any emissions stuff. I looked up Nevada and this is all I could find. The smog guy opens the hood and closes it before connecting the OBD plugin to his machine. I am guessing he is looking for modifications that might delete any smog devices. From Matt's pics so far it doesn't look like it will be super obvious there is a turbo?? Any speculation on whether this would fail on the scan only? I might stop by one of these little smog huts and ask the guy. I'll report back if I get any details.

    "Nevada uses On-Board Diagnostics (OBDII) Testing for 1996 and newer vehicles. The operator will connect an analyzer to the OBD computer in your vehicle. Data from your vehicle will indicate whether its emissions systems are operating properly and within emissions limits."

    No, it wont be cooler than ambient, but that's not what is being discussed. If I'm not mistaken, people were saying that an intercooler essentially serves no purpose. And that isn't true.

    You have your ambient air temp. Turbo makes it hot. Intercooler cools it down (although not as cool as ambient temp). It enters engine.

    This is why the hotter the ambient temp, the hotter your BATs will be

    I like to think of an intercooler as a A/C machine on steroids. Which mains purpose is to provide cooler temperatured air molecules than at ambient temp. If the pressurized air exiting the intercooler is Ambient temperature, then the intercooler is not doing its job. Plain and simple. You are more likely going to run into engine failure due to high temps, pistons cracking, housing cracking over the course of running your vehicle.

    Intercooler water sprayer is to help adjust your intercooler temperature "externally." If your intercooler is running above manufacturer's guidelines, then yes, a intercooler sprayer may be helper. You probably be running your turbos too high liek high PSI or some shit like that.

    Be careful.

    I was specifically responding to the comment on the air cooling down the cylinders, that's not where the efficiency will be gained.

    Compressor side of turbo takes ambient air and compresses it. During compression air is more dense and also hotter.

    Air is passed through intercooler to reduce temps. Temps will still be above ambient.

    Compressed air leaving the intercooler enters the engine. It's already hotter than it would be without a turbo. This dense charge air is then ignited with more fuel than a non-turbo would use because there is more air. The increase air and fuel make for an even hotter combustion event.

    TL:DR. Forced induction engines run hotter.

    In an air to air intercooler, it’s not possible for the air exiting the intercooler to be lower than ambient temperature, unless using another external form of cooling at the same time. It’s also nothing like an A/C system, since there is no use of refrigerant for cooling.

    Wait, why would air temps still be above ambient temperature after the intercooler?

    I'll take a look at the video soon but here was my understanding.
    exhaust from engine spools turbo takes in air from outside and compresses it (now hotter)
    Hot air runs thru intercooler (now cool air)
    Cool air enters engine for combustion which exits as fumes.
    Fumes then help spool turbo once more while leaving exhaust pipes.

    Ambient air is the temperature outside of air intake, or pre-charge air.

    That is how it works. If ambient air is 75 degrees Fahrenheit, then the intercooler cannot cool the air from the turbo below 75F.

    Intercooler can't get the temps lower than ambient. It's all about heat transfer. If you leave a hot cup of coffee on your desk it will not get colder than the room it's in.

    you're correct, but the intercooler air is not cooler than ambient, only cooler than it was once compressed.
