Trans overheated while driving in 2wd TC off, in sand. Got the AT Oil temp light on. Ordering a larger trans cooler, and will be doing a drain/fill soon.

At least you have the towing package so all you need to do is swap the cooler. I know ATs can be annoying with their drain/fill procedure though. Have you ever done on yours? I thought people mentioned 100k on AT. On my MT, every 30k i did drain and fill of the tranny. But each time the oil looked very good, almost as clear as the new stuff. Tcase same way. Diffs were another story.

Danny did it near 50k. But since the temp got to 300*, I really need to have it done. There was a chart of the life of the fluid that @gearcruncher posted somewhere

I also thought that since the cooler is bigger, more fluid is needed.

Why didn't you drive in 4LO? That way it's less strain on the tranny. The torque converter is what creates the most heat and this would alleviate that.

Yeah it will displace more fluid from the tranny. If you need help give a shout. Hopefully you have room for the larger tranny cooler. Is it in front of or behind the sc radiator? 300* is high, definitely swap that old atf as it probably reduced its life significantly.

I was testing different things out. When leaving, did 4H and didnt get above 190.

Also, speed limit was 25. No way i was getting that high in lo.

But in the past now. Time to upgrade

I think im going to have him do it again. Some things I dont want to do in my driveway. Doesn't the tranny take 13qt to fill? I dont have the room for that

IMO no need to upgrade, just use it as a learning experience, change your ATF and know what you need to do differently moving forward. This is the only time yours trans overheated and now you know how to avoid that.

That is true, but I want to upgrade. A bigger one is only ~$55. I can install, then instantly drain/refill the trans. Then it will be ready for hills or sand or whatever I throw at it

Thinking about it. Thats the highest cost one. Hoping some discounts can be found on cool stuff. Definitely cool rigs to be seen.

Did you try 2wd in 2 ? Even with a bigger cooler you will overheat if you drive in sand in D. Basically you have to select whatever gear keeps your torque converter from slipping. Slipping =friction =heat. Keep your rpm up around 2.5-3.5k and let the motor do the work instead of the transmission. If you see your temp going up on the scangauge shift to a lower gear. When I was towing my trailer up union springs I was in 4 lo in 1st gear most of the time to keep the transmission temp below 200 degrees. When in the mountains on really hilly roads I'm in 3 to keep the temps down. I'm 4.88 geared as well so that helps some.

If you disconnect your coolers return line to the transmission and bump the ignition it will pump trans fluid out. Do 2 quarts at a time ,refilling as you go until newer looking fluid comes out. There is a write up somewhere on TW about it. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/diy-full-flush-for-automatic-transmission.68462/
    Found it ^
