The only time I received that error was when I had me key to the accessory setting and not the "on" setting. Other possibility is that the cable is not fully set someplace in the connection (or possibly damaged in the middle).

That's due to the cable you're using. I ordered a Mini VCI cable and it didn't have all the functionality that was necessary. I got communication errors with a few of the functions that I tested out before attempting the update. I still want to do some more testing on it though.

Anyways, I ended up using a Tactrix cable to do the deed.

I got this error on my first try because TS was looking for a different default cable. Once I picked the Tactrix interface from the drop down, I had no issues. The setting stayed for the next use.

I'm guessing that it doesn't like your cable for writing to the ECU?

Thanks. Switch was set to ON.

Did you order the official device or one of the knockoffs from aliexpress? Got a link to what you ordered?

Thanks @tonered. I will keep that in mind. The reviews look promising. I also like how the firmware can be updated, unlike the AliExpress Tactrix knockoffs. Shame the pictures don't show what the guts look like. If I end up buying this device to try, I will post my experience with it.

Does anyone else have a positive experience with an affordable cable that supports ECU flashing? Has anyone here used the VXDIAG VCX Nano yet?

I have off of work today, so I’ll see if I can test out the cable some more with the earlier version of Techstream. I was having some issues with my Tactrix cable and the newer version of the software.

Just had mine done at the dealer.(NS Canada) I had alot of sputtering on gear shifts from 1st to 2nd. Works like a charm now. Truck feels a bit lighter probably a better power distribution. Overall worth while. Covered by Toyota. Went from 04B11 to 04B13. Drives like it should have from the factory.

Any chance of getting a pic of your work order? I'd love a little ammunition going into my dealer.

I just explained about the stuttering and mentioned the update on the auto and showed a pic of the code with the manual ecu numbers. Everyone was pretty receptive. They agreed to check it but said if there were no updates it would be half hour of shop time. Protip: american tsb numbers wont work lol.2018-09-07 11.36.51.jpg 2018-09-07 11.41.08.jpg

Actually, this is one of the RARE weekends that I am around here. No need to rush tonite, we can do this tomorrow (Saturday)

That and the 4:30pm out of MTL is usually a sacrificial lamb that gets cancelled for no reason (AC) lol...dunno why, it just usually is.

I didn’t make the attempt because it was giving me communication errors with Techstream. But I was running version 13.something at the time. I noticed that my Tactrix was having com issues with that version as well so I rolled back to 12.20.024. My next step is to test out the Mini VCI with this version to see if the com issues are still there. I was planning to do it today, but I don’t see it happening anytime soon. I’ll try to get it tested before the weekend is over.

What cable do the dealerships use to update the software? Why pay $200 for Tactrix cable? Are Mini-VCI J2354 not compatible with 3rd gens?

*I had already posted a successful update earlier but forgot to thank everyone.

    THANKS EVERYONE!

Here's some additional data that may or may not help others

I have both the MINI-VCI and the Tactrix cable

Already had TS 10.30.029 and the MINI-VCI working

Upgraded to the TS 12.20.024 linked earlier in this thread and TS still worked as it should using the MINI-VCI. No comm errors

Didn't have the nerve to be a guinea pig and ordered the Tactrix cable

Updated from 04B12 to 04B13 with TS 12.20.024 installed, the Tactrix cable and the provided .cuw file with zero issues

Both cables work fine and communicate through TS

In TS, under Setup, VIM Select... the two different cables show as follows:

    OpenPort 2.0 J2534 ISO/CAN/VPW/PWM (Tactrix)

    XHorse - MVCI (MINI-VCI)

All running on an older Dell laptop, Windows 7 Pro SP1, 32bit. This laptop was wiped and purpose built for just this, it only has TS installed

And it's all still in the back of my truck :D
