I think pavement helps file nails down. I don't think that pavement is ever really an ideal surface for running because it's a lot harder than most natural terrain.

I can't think of a peaceful way to trim nails with a combative dog other than sedative.

Me too. I don't think I've ever done any trimming on any of my Labs nails.

My brother will throw a tennis ball down the street a couple times when his dogs get too long. Files them right down. But for mine, we never get to that point.

My dog, even sedated, will attack you if you try and clip her nails. She's almost 70lbs and is the sweetest thing ever, as long as you don't touch her nails.

I ended up getting a pull-up bar for the door jam and cut up an old bag I had to put her in it and suspend her in the air. For some reason when her feet or off the ground she doesn't seem to care. Basically I made a homemade version of this. So far it's the ONLY way I can clip her nails or use the nail dremel on her.

My daughter has a puppy. She was not able to cut his nails, so she brought him to the groomer. Where he screamed. He peed. He pooped. His tongue turned blue from lack of oxygen.

I forwarded her the link, and she is in the process of making a dog sling right now. I appreciate the heads up on the technique, and hope it works for her too.

I’m curious how the lack of O2 relates to the clipping? Was the pup in a collar?

He screamed so long and loud and continuous that he couldn't breath.

The groomer was firm, but gentle with him. Despite needing a shower afterwards.

Ah. One thing that’s helpful before grooming starts is to handle their feet. Probe between the toes getting them used to something that can be pretty uncomfortable.

Yeah, after this experience, they have started annoying the snot out of him on a routine basis so that he will be used to it...

Also, he is a puppy and it was his first go at having his toenails trimmed. He is a smart boy, and will eventually figure out that it is not really going to kill him.

    Yeah.
My male Shiba won't have it with you touching his paws. At all. My old vet asked to clip his nails as a challenge (no charge), and he struggled like mad but didn't do the Shiba Scream. I thought he was awful, but the vet said he was the best Shiba he's done. May try the sling thing, but pretty sure he will go nuts. Our female is just about 1 year old and I've been handling her paws more, she seems ok with it for now but I doubt she will be much better about the nails. They wear them down a little just running around, but sure would like to keep them shorter.

Our French bulldog hates getting his nails trimmed as well. It is embarrassing and heartbreaking hearing him scream when the vet techs trim them. We did find one groomer now that can do them so fast he doesn't even realize she is doing it and she only charges $5.

Our breeder did this from the time they were a few days old up until we brought him home. It made a huge difference, not only for feet, but he's the most tolerant dog I've ever been around. About once a week, I take a dental scraper to his teeth to scrape off the plaque, he just lays there while I do it. There's been lots of studies on how good it is for the dogs. Most dogs bred for military or police work had it done also. It makes them less stressed.
