What does that mean? What is cross traffic?

It has a longer-range mode where if you're backing out of a parking space or something it'll go BEEP BEEP BEEP if someone's coming at you crosswise behind you. From a pretty long range, like 30 yards. It's pretty neat!

I suppose that could be useful, but I literally never back out of a parking spot. It's impossible to see anything when backing out. I always back into parking spots. Much easier to scope the area as you drive by, then back in. Subsequently, this allows you to pull out when you leave.

Mine gets used daily. We live in an area with tons of kids and people who walk or run by. We have a boulevard that runs through our driveway. It warns me all the time that someone or something is going by as I back out of our garage. I honestly wouldn't ever consider a vehicle that didn't have it after having it.

I'll be the first to admit that it is in no way necessary, but it is a pretty clever/cool piece of tech.

I hear my BSM cross traffic alert almost daily. Lots of folks walk dogs in the neighborhood, we have no sidewalks, and a fir number leaving for work about the same time. This leads to a somewhat steady flow of morning cross traffic. Like you I normally back into parking spots while out and around town for the same reasons you mention. I do however drive straight into my driveway, so I back out regularly.

My BSM, while in my driveway, has a range of about 1/2 a block (plus the street). Doing some quick "guesstimate" math: 35 foot of yard, 2 lane residential road +30 foot, one more home property 65-70 foot; means I get alerts for dog walkers etc about 40+ yards.

I have a corner lot and my property is a bit higher than most of the neighborhood. I think that I am about 1 foot higher than the road yet still sit level, which helps to add to the distance, much like a lift may add distance to your camera, TSS, and general sight line range.

Most of the time I hear the alert it is more of a "yeah I know, I can see them". But there is the occasional child or dog just appearing into view after I had checked that direction and shifted into reverse. Once in a while some young driver or delivery guy zipping down the road faster than he should as well. For these I love the alert.

To each's own. It sounds like you spend more time backing up than I do. Maybe if I had the sensors I would back up more often. But since I don't have them, I have been programmed to avoid it when possible.

Probably not, backing into spaces is way easier than pulling in, if you already back into spaces, it wont make you change your ways.

I actually keep mine turned off because I don't want to become dependant on it and I need to get used to it since your steel plate bumper is not BSM compatible :)

I have a Softopper with a solid panel in the rear, so I can't see anything out of my rear view mirror. So I avoid backing up if possible. Backing into spaces is so much easier since you have a much better idea of what's behind you and the conditions aren't likely to change.

The diversity we have here on TW is great. With the exception of a few snowflakes and agitators, our members do a great job of helping one another find the help and advice they need.

I am probably in the minority on TW in that I do not, generally, off-road. My truck is my DD and I spend most of my spare time playing with my dog, working on the house or yard, hanging out with the wife, go to the gun range when I can, etc. I love my Taco. I have done and will do more mods.:woot:

I recognize good work done by guys like you, @mesojdm, @mattgecko , @customcargrills , and so many others. TW has such a great group of vendors and contributors. :hattip: I appreciate a wide variety of builds off-road builds, overland guys, mall crawlers, and even customized pavement princesses most customization can all get admiration from me (except the "slammed" trucks, with those I just don't get it. :notsure:).

My interest in a plate bumper would be beefing up after someone has decided I needed a stronger bumper and volunteered to buy one for me by smashing into the stock one. :sawzall::welder::transformer::yes:

That and it is U-G-L-Y. Easily the worst bumper design I've seen yet when you factor in the departure angle decrease lol

Why don't we start with the C4 Fab BSM compatible design and improve from there? I'm not a fan of the angled license plate or driving around with the plate facing the sky when I'm using the hitch. C4 did that do gain ground clearance. I say make a bumper that is no shorter than a license plate so it can remain vertical but move the plate off-center so a hitch won't compete for the same space.

What's your rationale for this? Just curious.

I often use a bike rack on the hitch. I can see how towing a full trailer would obscure the trucks plate so someone might not notice. But with the bike rack (or something like a wilco hitchgate) the plate should still be readable.

I also don't like the C4 solution because they use a stick on LED strip to light the plate. This goes on the bottom of the tailgate. I'm not sure that would work well if the tailgate was down.

    Joe,

Why can't you make one of your bumpers with a 45 degree angle at the bottom corner so a cut
out for BSM to be used? Just like the C4 rear bumper.

Three reasons. First, it looks terrible. Second, you're cutting a big hole in the bumper and filling it will a plastic cover. Kinda silly for an offroad bumper. Third and most important, it still doesn't work that well. There seem to be scatter reports that all the BSM compatible aftermarket have issues. At this time, we just don't want the headache and liability of trying to make the system work.
