Yeah, I looked into that too. They made them out of plastic and people were complaining they were weak and breaking after a few uses

I'm mistaken, that's a new one. The old one was hand crank, this one uses a drill.
I think would be difficult to get drill in engine bay

Well. Here’s the thing. There’s tons of really cool things about the 2.7, one of them is the spin on disposable. Until you, the only complaints I’ve heard were from 3.4 owners complaining about the overcomplicated bs with the cartridge. It just seems weird to some in this thread, why a person would want to take their perfectly good set up and ruin the simplicity of it with... that thing.

This guy makes a great point:
Toyota is getting away from the filters we have on the 2.7, it's wasteful.
This mod is to help those that have this type filter, you're getting caught up on my link to the 2.7 to 3.5 conversion- go and be dismissive on that thread.

Yes, I’m only speaking on the 2.7 cartridge conversion. The fumoto valve on the 3.4 is probably a novel way to remove the oil. But as I said, I’m speaking on the 2.7, and questioning the need. Yes... that sheet metal around the filter SURE IS A WASTE o_O

I’ll take the spin on. Thank you.

Don’t care that SOMEWHERE there is a desert wasteland of spin on filter sheet metal as far as the eye can see...

For what it's worth, many vehicles had cartridge filters decades ago. Spin-on filters were a trickle down from racing technology...gaining traction on street cars in the 1950s and 60s.

In a sense we've just come full circle. People who've owned Camrys, Avalons, Siennas, Highlanders, Prius, Corollas, 4Runners, FJs, Tundras, etc. and all manner of Lexus products have been doing the whole cartridge thing for many years. The original 2GR was introduced in 2004 in the '05 Avalon and was the 1st engine to switch to this system. Most other engines followed suit with each redesign. Other than the Yaris iA which I don't know enough about (Mazda produced with a Mazda engine), the only Toyota product currently produced with a spin-on can filter is the A86 with a Subaru engine.

I've owned 3 Tacos....2 with the 2.7 4s. Frankly, the cartridge filter setup in all other engines I've experienced is no more difficult or messy than getting the spin-on filter off a 2.7. In fact, I'd rather deal with the cartridge. o_O

That said.....I do enjoy the top mounted can filter on my 1GR. :D

OP....I've always been a bit shy of the Fumoto valve. Seems like a potential failure point in my paranoid mind. That said....nice mod. Props.

I took a cap-style filter wrench and put it in a sawed-off vitamin bottle to act as a catcher, then drilled a hole in the cap to pass a 3/8" drive extension thru. We'll see how well this works come November lol.
Not sure if this reply was to my post or the OP. With a Subaru EJ25 where the filter is under the block, when you unscrew the filter, the oil that spills out is from the galleys in the block, not from the filter. That's why a small filter can still be messy.

I have a 4runner as well so i understand these filters and how they drain on 3rd gens, i have no issue or mess changing mine as the plastic drain adapter does its job that comes with the kit and untwisting the canister is no different.

I had a Fumoto on my Dodge, and Wife's Subi for 15 and 3 years - not a drop of leakage. That's through Salt, Mud, and who knows...I'll jump off this bridge after a few changes cause me grief! Thanks!

What’s the point of this? Just put some disposable gloves on and pour the cup of oil out. You’ll spend more time dicking with the stupid valve to have a negligible amount of oil come out, all while still needing to remove the canister to change the filter. In addition, this adds several inches of snag-able area to the bottom of an item that needs to stay intact at all times.

Thanks for the guide, but not for me.

Not to play devils advocate, but if something manages to snag that QR valve, it would be the least of your worries, since probably half your truck would be missing Lol. But yeah it’s a lot of work for not a lot of return.

I'd guess the spin on filters get recycled, at least I hope that's what happens after I hand it to the guy in AutoZone.

Double bagged, since the first one obviously had a hole and leaked when I took it off.

Yeah I agree. All jokes aside steel gets recycled, it’s a non issue.
