What all does the check engine & ABS light monitor?

I am wondering what systems does the check engine light and ABS light monitor?

Can the check engine light just come on because you have not reset something after an oil change?

Can the ABS light come on because of a different size wheel or taking it through mud?

The ABS light monitors the self-check status of the ABS setup. If it stays on it means one or more components of the ABS aren't verified as working right. If you have a locker it lights up whenever the locker is engaged, because the ABS is disabled while the locker is in use.

Different sized wheels should have no effect on the ABS indicator (unless you damage ABS components putting the wheels on). Same thing for mud - it should have no effect unless it's affected or disabled one or more ABS components.

 

The Check Engine light is based on trigger parameters from the ECU. It can be any single or combination of 100's of conditions or failures. The Main't Req;d light that folks talk about is from the not resetting the counter.

On a stock 1995.5 - 2004 Taco there is nothing to be reset after an oil change that should trigger a CEL.

On the other hand ... If you disconnect or de-power certain components it might cause the ECM to temporarily throw a code until it verifies things are working right.

What about putting bigger tires on in regards to the speed sensors...wouldn't that throw the ABS light

 

What about putting bigger tires on in regards to the speed sensors...wouldn't that throw the ABS light [/quote]nope.it may or may not affect the speedo reading the correct speed depending on how much bigger the tire is from stock,but as far as the light it wont come on as long as everything is working correctly. and as long as the wheels are all turning at the same speed. thats why you get a light if you put a doughnut spare on some cars.

 

if you damage a sensor or tone ring while in the mud it will come on. also if you get water in the connector or mud between the ring and sensor .

 

yes after i engage my locker or i put it in 4 lo it will not shut off unless i turn my truck off and start it back up
