Are you talking bout making the scoop functional? If so, it won't work, the scoop is in a low pressure area on the hood

That hood scoop is in a high velocity, low pressure area of the hood. It's not high enuf to get out of the laminar flow to catch extra air, and the engine bay is full of high pressure, low velocity air.

SOOO...It won't do quite what you are hoping it will.

X2..There has been several informative threads on the sport hood scoop. Unfortunately, it's only for looks unless your design involve raising the height at least 6 inches or more..

me too.i really dont understand, i installed a glass hood on the stang and the scoops are a little lower than the trd sport hood, with just that mod i saw a seven hp increase on the dyno with a stock engine using the stock airbox modified of course .. looks like ill have to rig up the redneck wind tunnel next weekend, im gona do some research. maybe rig up a chevy maf to my scanner and see what kind of flow i can get thru the scoop...

engine bay pressure shouldnt matter, im talking about a closed system directly to the intake (filtered of course),the intake tract when sealed other than the inlet is always negative pressure while the engine is running, all we need is high velocity , why would it matter if the scoop was in a low pressure area? the intake tract will always be in a state of vacume.which is much lower than any amospheric pressure.

Has alot to do with the shape of the front end of our Tacos. Not much air flow at the hood scoop level once air flow passes over the front end and to the windshield. Ever drive on the highway and see a bug or leaf sitting on the scoop area and not move? Anyways, I would love to see your design, I really do hope it works. You will have alot of interests from us with sport hoods..Good luck!

Low pressure = less air molecules.

hmmm, well if this dosent work, ill make a ram air that fits into the lower valance and try that. im just stubborn lol,and bored. every once in a while i get the bug to make things or improve on things,i made a ram air for one of my mustangs by removing a foglight and using some dryer duct, crude yes, a consistant tenth of my quarter times, priceless. that was when i was 18 i dont do crude mods anymore just ideas to make our tacos stronger , faster and better...

Yea, low pressure = less air which = less oxygen to burn. Bad enough for N/A, even worse for FI.

Really about the only 'useful' thing you can probably do is open it up to allow heat to escape the bay easier...

I wonder if making the scoop taller, and getting it into the high velocity and high pressure air that right now flows over it. Maybe thats why the STI scoop is so big?

I think if you made the scoop taller it just wouldn't look right...not on a truck...but if it was closer to the front of the hood maybe?

The STI also doesnt' throw air up above the scoop with it's massive front :p

Plus, it's scoop only runs air over the top mount intercooler... which is pretty stupid to start with. FMIC is much better, because heat rises from the engine which will drive the top mount cooler's temps up.

if one was to block the opening in the front pass inner fender would that affect the air flow? just wondering cuz i did. mud gets in there and weighs my bumper down causing it to fall down!!

yea fmic would be better in most applications, but the idea is to have the intercooler and turbo setup with as little piping as possible, making the turbo lag virtually disappear. From what I hear, they did a great job getting rid of the turbo lag. but that's for a different thread haha.

School me on why high velocity == low pressure. If the scoop is capturing that high velocity air then why would it matter what the pressure is if it is indeed ramming/entering the scoop? Is the very front of the hood high pressure? That is where I have place my ram air system on my cars and they work well.

Its a low pressure area. Try this......SPray water on the hood, and see how fast you have to drive before it blows off.... I have been over 50 mph, and the water drops just wiggle. The air flowing over the hood is not strong enough to break the cohesion the water has on the hood. The scoop is too small to allow for any real flow into the intake. To get the intake to pull air from that location, you would have to fabricate a new intake with enough curves, and restrictions to impede/nullify any theoretical gains. AND.....A Cars aerodynamics are MUCH different than a trucks.
