I have USAA as well, I think i might do their warranty when mine runs out. Most people probably don't know who USAA is, so they dont know that it's not just some random 3rd party warranty. I've had them for insurance and loans for about 15 years. I'm a happy customer

You can still shop around and purchase a Toyota Extended Warranty, which would be a better choice than any 3rd party warranty

I reluctantly purchase GAP insurance on new vehicle purchases when I'm making payments.

Now I'm going to shop for a human health warranty.

I've never purchased EW on any Toyota/Lexus I've owned in the past (and never needed it and both my old PreRunner and Lexus 470 went past 150k without major issues).

However, we did purchase it on our 2011 BMW X5 Diesel which has 79880 miles right now. Had 2 mishaps past 50k (one with fuel tank and another with broken pulley) and both were covered under extended warranty and only paid $50 out of pocket.

My air suspection is going out now and have made appointment with dealer on Monday and it will be covered as well. We paid $1800 for the extended warranty (CarMax) and it's already paid off.

Once I get the air suspension is fixed, I'm going to trade it towards a 2017/2018 Sports Taco. Love the diesel X5 but the cost of ownership once outside extended warranty (80k)will be too much. Not to mention I was always a "truck guy" in the past (owned 2 gens of Prerunner in my day).

    @Taco Mustard

I'm in the industry and actually work for the Administrator of the USAA Extended Vehicle Protection Plan. By far it is the most comprehensive plan I have seen and is reasonably priced. I'm actually planning on purchasing a USAA Wrap plan on the wife's Kia when basic is closer to expiring.

As other's have said, it's a toss up on whether or not it works in your favor. Some people buy it and never have to use it, others end up exhausting the limits of liability very quickly. Usually depends on the vehicle in question. I don't see a ton of Toyota claims, now is that because they're not breaking or is it that Toyota owner's aren't buying them? I don't have the answer to that particular question. It's a toss up as to whether you want to risk it or not.

I will point out one thing, depending on what state you reside in, there are special state disclosures which the States impose as a safeguard to the consumer. Remember, these are not Warranty's, they are service agreements and will have very specific rules that you will need to follow (such as to maintain your vehicle and keep all receipts). Also, if you plan on modding your truck, I would not consider these as normally any modifications or alterations to the vehicle could result in the denial of claims. If you have any other questions, I'll try my best to answer.

There are quite a few non factory warranties out there that have better coverage all the way around including easier approval than USAA .
USAA not saying USAA is not a good choice at all only that there are better, not opinion but there are industry ratings and reviews that back this up.
Ok now is where you get upset and ...well go right ahead.
Just got done kayaking and want some lunch ;)

My Certified warranty was up in 2k so I shopped around for extending it with a Toyota warranty. Got a 8yr/100k warranty for a good price. No way I'm owning a 3rd Gen without a warranty. I've had 4 dealer visits in 10k miles so I'm not confident with going without a warranty on this truck. One repair alone would have cost me close to $5k if it was customer pay.

No worries, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and you may be correct in regards to other extended service agreements out there. From my own personal experience (working in an automotive shop for over 8 years) and my current job and dealing with dealers/shops that call some of these other places. We get a lot of praise for how we do business and how easy it is to work with us. I made my above comments about USAA purely based on the fact that the OP had mentioned that policy in particular. What other policy do you know of that will cover the starting battery in your vehicle?

I need to get back out on my kayak.

Mind if I ask what kinda repairs? I've owned old gen Prerunners and really no major issue around 150k miles when I sold it. I'll be trading my X5 end of this year to get a 17 or 18 Sports Taco. Anything I should be aware of before? I always thought the Taco's were the most reliable trucks in the mid truck market to this day.

My other option is to wait out the new 2019 Ford Ranger or Chevy Colarado diesel but I've heard some isues with their drivetrain and cold engine start issues.

I bought the platinum warranty but got it for employee cost ($1200) which is good to 10yr/100k. I’ve already used it for the squeaky high pressure fuel filter. That part is $1300.

If they don’t come down I would say no, but your call man

I bought a 2010-sr5-v6-6 speed w/ 50,000km in 2013. I opted for the remainder of a 3rd party 10yr/200,000km warranty (Secure Drive, top package available) The warranty I got covers quiet a bit that normal warranties don't. It ended up costing $4,200.

So far I am at over $9,000 worth in repairs, and each time I claim something it costs $50.

I am currently at 159,000kms (41,000kms remaining on warranty, or till 2020)

I am very happy I bought the insurance. but it was also a pre-certified tacoma VS brand new
