No, not unless you ever want to convert your truck to auto trans or want to move the radiator to an auto trans truck later on.
It's a small sealed heat exchanger inside the radiator with it's own inlet and outlet on the drivers side of the radiator. Neither the truck nor the heat exchanger care if it's used or not. You could pack it with mud and there would be no contamination to the engines coolant.

But, on the first drive. A very easy first drive because it was also the first drive on my new diffs, I hit 200*.

TBH, I never paid much attention to coolant temps until I noticed it going over 210* while towing this summer.

Wasn’t expecting 200* on an easy drive on a 59* F day though.

Makes me wonder if I have another issue. Fan possibly.

Just curious, did you use the rubber trim gasket between the shroud and the radiator?

I don’t have a stock 1GR thermostat to check, but are we installing our thermostats with the jiggle valve in the right orientation?

Something I’ve recently read is that Toyota recommends the thermostat on some of their vehicles be oriented with the jiggle valve at the 6 o’clock position. When I first started wrenching I was taught that it goes at 12 o’clock. So naturally mine is currently at 12 o’clock.

I’ve read more than one forum post where the poster also had theirs at 12 o’clock and when they flipped the jiggle valve to 6 o’clock, they experienced 10*-15* reduction in operating temp. I’m not sure how that can be, since I’m no fluid dynamics expert. But it seems to be worth a try.

I did not. I was thinking that that was only needed if making the Tacoma shroud work with the FJ rad.

    I used the FJ Shroud.

I’ve been looking at pics of the stock 1GR thermostat online and I can make out what the position of the jiggle valve is. If it even has one.

Since we have to hack up the stock one for the UCON install, I don’t have my original to check.

Since the stock one only goes one way, there would be no mention of this in the FSM.

There is a gap. Damn it.

I’m going to order a new fan clutch. They’re cheap enough. I’ll put the weather stripping on when I swap the clutch out. Maybe screw with the oil too.

You mean a gap between the fan blade and the shroud?
