The Icom V8000 is a HAM radio. You need a license to operate in the outpuut frq's that it transmits on or face a LARGE fine buy th FCC if you get caught. It transmits on 144mHz - 148mHz which are 2 meter FM HAM frq's.

It is NOT a "race" radio. I am a HAM Operator.

I am a HAM too. It's one thing to own a radio and another to tx on a freq that you are not legally authorized to tx on. There are freq's that are outside of the 2 meter that people can use... such as MURS frequencies. Also when it comes to a MAYDAY it is a great tool and would not be an issue.

Regardless, a license is easy to obtain if one wants one.

I find it sad when some HAM operators intimate "You can't play" - we should all be saying: "Go get a license and use it. You may save your life or someone else's."

I personally encourage anyone going off road to get a HAM license - you can study 2 nights and take and pass the test. Search for HAM Study Guide and there are plenty of free ones out there like http://w5yd.org.msstate.edu/new_site/files/Element2_Study_Guide.pdf

These can be a true LIFE SAVER! And all due respect to kd8awe, but do not take his advice to steer clear. Take different advice - Go get a license if you want to tx on HAM freqs, take it seriously, and add another layer of family security for you and your loved ones.

I got my license after hearing about a guy stuck in the snow in the Sierras last year in his Jeep - only had a CB and did not come back home! He is dead. :( More than likely if he was properly equipped with a HAM radio, he would be here to tell others how it saved his ass!

PM me if you need any help in getting licensed.

EDIT: If you want to know more about MURS - Start here: http://home.provide.net/~prsg/murs_faq.htm

I am sorry if I offended any HAM's for not giving a word of encouragement or providing the information on how get "on the air". It was not my intent to have anyone "steer clear". It was my intent to let him know that the Icom v8000 is not a "Race Radio". Also you can check in your area for a local Amateur radio club. They will gladly help you get involved in Amateur Radio.

I personaly run two radios in my Taco. I am running a Yeasu 8900r Quad band and a RCI 2950.

For those who have the Cobra 75. Is the speaker good on it? Can you hear the chatter with road/wind noise and/or the stereo on?

Nice to hear. Are you satisfied with it?

Since I have no clock, that little space makes for the perfect mounting spot for a Cobra 75.

Do you have a firestick set up or a grounded antennna?

i had the 75WXST for a few months...

it was ok at first, but then the audio started getting distorted... sounded over modulated with the volume up... it became annoying enough for me to sell it and get another radio...

It sounds to me like you never properly metered your radio. When you have a CB, you need to connect it to an SWR meter and "Tune" your antenna. If you do not do this, you run this risk of sending too much power directly back into the CB whenever you transmit and it will slowly ruin your radio. I am sure that is why your radio sounded fine at first then started sounding bad. Every time you transmitted on an untuned radio, you were slowly but surely frying your CB.

    r3m1,
Nice looking install. What is the CB make/model?

How much did dash you have to remove to do the install or did you get to everything by just removing the ash tray? Like the mic wire coming out of the cig lighter hole. Did you use the cig lighter power for the CB?

i do have the SWR and tuned it every 6 months, but i think having both HAM radio and CB, CB just seemed inferior to where i eventually gave up... hahahah

yah, we know what the ICOM is, but since us racing heads use them primarily for the race frequencies and not on the streets or at home, we tend not to refer to them as HAM radios...

when we are out and about in the city, we like to use cell phones... hahahaha

oh, and just to clarify... only reason i brought up the HAM radio was because i know the region the OP offroads in, and CB is pretty useless to that region...

if it were someone out of state or a street queen, i woulda stayed on topic about the CB...

    I hear you!

    word

But that's why we love you! ;-) And yes, you could pass that test! Just use that book I posted on the other board. Are you going to Ontario? Mario and I were going to go but I would rather going wheeling. :)
