This is what dad started me out on when I was still in single digits. Many happy memory's of riding in the sand.

I still think Honda could make a killing if they brought back the Trail 90. I'd have one just because...

Ok this thread is getting me all nostalgic for my old 2 wheelers. I can't find a single picture of a scooter, but I did find this shot of my sisters posing with my sweet Evel Knievel bike, with the bonus of mom's '68 Galaxie 500 XL fastback (?) in the background.

@Cypherian WTH first the AF gets Chuck and now Tacomas?!

    But 3rd Gens :p

    Yes

His steak still looks great though!

I learned how to drive in a Galaxy 500, with the 400. Wasn't the 429 Police Interceptor but sure had plenty of power. Not long after I first got my license had Brett Bodine and Jimmy Langdon in the back seat don't even recall who was in the passenger seat. Being cool I drove one handed and too fast on a dirt road and drifted to the shoulder and almost took us all out by going over a cliff. Happened to look in the rear view mirror and Brett was smirking and elbowed Jimmy and they both smiled. They were a year younger than me and didn't even have their licenses yet. Thought yeah Brett I'd like to see you do better.

Between his Uncles and brother Geoff (and later Todd) I should have known he would do better. Much better.

Costco thick pork marinated 24 hours in ginger ale and soy. Cubed and basted with Italian spicy dressing. With plenty of apple wood smoke. Pork, Onions and Peppers first.

    Then pineapple and cherry tomatoes.

I was in my later 30's. I've been doing this motorcycle thing for a while. I think the worst trip was when I was about 13 or 14. My brother had a new XL350 and we rode double on that thing from Ukiah to Fresno. He was 16 or 17.

I had to edit my age. I was thinking it was later than it was.

I think one that could've and almost turned ugly was July 4th weekend 2013. I just bought my newest bike and my wife wanted to go to Hollister from El Cajon. It was 110+ going up through the San Joaquin Valley. I kept checking with my wife if she was ok or wanted to pull over and she said she was fine. About 20 miles later it hit her and we had to pull over because she was overheating. We had Camelbacks and a bunch of other stuff I iced down at every stop before that. It was just too much for her. So we spent about an hour getting liquids in her and heat out of her. Luckily we were just south of Fresno that time and had the options of stopping whenever we needed to. So we finally got to our hotel room and had a good chance to rest. Coming out of Hollister on that Sunday we took 101 all the way back south It was a whole lot cooler till we come out of LA across 210 to SB and down 15. Still not as bad as hwy 99 but still plenty warm.

I think it was 2009, we went to Laughlin River Run. We rode down to the Avi. When we got there I looked at my wife and actually got scared. Her face was beet red and she looked like shit. I got her inside and sat her down for a loooong time. I’ve never seen her affected by heat like that.

In all fairness the KLR is a 650. It’s carburated. And the only real changes to it since it came out in the 80s is cosmetic. Still a 5 speed box. Engine the same. It doesn’t do anything great, but it does everything. I’ve had mine 75 on the interstate. It takes 15 minutes to change the front sprocket. So you could change to a 16 for highway, and drop to a 14 for dirt. Some people say even toothed sprockets will wear the chain funny though. I just run the stock 15. The complaint is vibration at highway speed. I don’t notice it though. One really nice thing about the KLR, the tank is 6 gallons, and it gets 50 mpg.
The 1090 adventure rides smaller than it is. But that is the same basic bike that KTM riders have been winning the DAKAR with for 18 years.. ( 990, 1090, 1190 you get the idea). The Africa Twin rides smaller than it is too. But the KTMs have better suspension. Hell, IMHO the KTMs have better everything. But they have a price tag to go with it. Africa Twin you can get with an auto though.
No bike will be perfect for everything. You gotta find your happy medium. But, I do agree with you about the GS.

The camera bike is an automatic Africa Twin. We hit dirt about 30 seconds in.
