race radio uses frequencies in the private band that Ham radios can tap into... the audio quality of those radios is far superior to CB radios and range can be 2 to 3 times farther...

but it all depends on what type of wheeling you are into... most of the desert wheelers are running race/Ham and a good number of 4x4 crawlers are running CB....

Get a decent one with a 5/8 Firestick antenna and get your antenna tuned. I'd have a radio shop mod your CB with a "supertune". Youll get way better range and clarity along with being able to mod with click beeps etc. Supposedly a no no by FCC but I know a ton of people with supertunes, mostly applys to truckers drowning each other out on the road, but for off road use its common. Bunch of good info on the web on that topic :). Im using a basic Cobra 19 ultra w/ 5/8 stick and 6' of cable with awesome clarity, range.

Actually CB is in the 11 meter band... really to tap in to it you need a CB! :)

FRS - you can monitor those on a HAM but unless you can tune your radio down to .5 Watts you can't (legally) transmit on that band...

I have programmed my HAM to transmit at .5 watts on all FRS frequencies so I'm cool :)

The only thing is, if you are doing FRS for wheeling - it typically sucks!!! ;)

Plus, why would you use a $100-200 radio to do the job of a $10 radio. I just like to have those freqs programmed in so that when we have a FRS'r in our group or when I go running/hiking with friends. But once again, if I am hiking/running with friends, why bring the Osama Bin Laden radio when a radio the size of a spring roll would do the same job!?

BTW the only reason why you may use a HAM to tx on FRS is to use an antenna that is remotely mounted to the top of your truck.

race radios are preset with certain frequencies...

    http://www.pciraceradios.com

but since a number of folks use Ham radios to tap into those frequencies, conversations about race radios often branches off into a Ham radio convo...

sweet thanks, right now i have a cb radio in my car, but never use it since its only local truckers on it, but race radios seems like something worthwhile
