    I guess I worded that funny, she shows great protection dog potential. Once she's done teething we'll start bite training. Right now we're just going through the basic obedience training and she's learning quickly.

    That’s awesome. We did an eval at 10 weeks old and he showed great potential, but we just don’t have the time and club was far. Next dog will be a IPO dog for sure

    It's labor intensive for sure. And once you've gone down that path, there are a lot of liabilities you assume over and above owning a dog.

    Yeah we'll see how far she gets. We evaled her at what we thought was 8 weeks, turns out she was like 4-5 weeks. Damn Craigslist breeders. But she's a great dog otherwise. Even if we don't bite train, I doubt someone will fuck with us with the way she sounds.

    I picture a night scene, driving down a city boulevard on the way to settle a score, lots of out-of-focus lights in the background, and "In The Air Tonight" playing on the radio.

    Rescues are the way to go unless you need a specific breed to work or hunt. There are plenty of dogs on CL that legitimately need new homes. Unfortunately, most are there just to make someone a quick buck.

    <opinion type="rant">
    My issue with CL is the people having litters and then asking for an $800 "rehoming fee." Selling a litter of puppies isn't the same as rehoming dogs; it's pure greed. They are part of the overpopulation problem. I believe dog breeders should be licensed and certified and subject to regulation and heavy penalties.

    The pitbull producers are especially repulsive. If there is any dog that should have regulated breeding it is the pitbull. Legit, responsible breeders can breed for temperament and produce great family or working dogs. Backyard breeders likely don't know what temperament is and couldn't care less about the animal's health or if the pup is going to a good home capable of dealing with a strong dog with a lot of drive. If they can't, where does that dog end up? Back on CL? Surrendered to a shelter? Dropped in a field somewhere? Thankfully, there are organizations like
    Hope For Paws.

    And don't get me started on these "designer" hybrids with stupid names like "Gerberian Shepsky" or "Sheepadoodle." Reminds of that scene in Dumb and Dumber where Harry talks about mating a bulldog with a Shih Tzu to produce a bullshit. Bullshit indeed. Actually had a woman tell me her hybrid (Border Collie and something) was a new breed. I had to let her know it doesn't work that way.

    There are enough homeless dogs in the world without these greedy "designer" puppy producers appealing to the worst in human nature. People need to ask themselves why they are getting these dogs or a particular pure breed. I believe it's often for selfish, superficial reasons.

    The relationship between dogs and humans is like no other human-animal relationship. They depend on us for everything. Maybe we should stop looking at dogs as fashion accessories or status symbols and appeal to our better nature by showing some compassion for our non-purebred furry friends in need.

    Adopt. Don't shop.

    I agree. I don't pay for animals, I just try to give them a loving home. As like with this fool, yes fool. The boy just doesn't want to grow up, but hey why should he? He finally is getting fed and has a warm house with a solid roof (i think) over his head. This one came to me last October, after a local fire dept. almost ran him over, laying in the road trying to stay warm. People just don't make sense to me. Why get a dog then dump them off? Makes me sick and broke at the same time, cause I will not, if at all possible take a dog to the shelter.

    And look in their ears (had a GS that HATED having her ears messed with), lift their legs up like the vets do, look in their eyes and mouth. Get them used to being handled all over.

    This, and run your fingers between the pads on their feet to get them used to foreign object and tick searches after walks and outdoor playtime.

    It’s a very sad day today for me and my family. My JIMBO was diagnosed with an aggressive cancerous tumor under his right armpit in June. I had different avenues to take but in the end decided to just let him be as comfy as can be for as long as can be until he showed me he was ready. He was doing extremely well, great in fact for so long until he did a complete 180 Saturday night. Today we spent our last day with him, he was only 6. He was the best lab I’ve ever had and I’ve had a few. We even shared the same birthday. Rip. JIMBO

    I picked like only because I'm saddened by Jimbo's loss. Juan, I'm glad your family had 6 years with Jimbo but sad to hear about his passing. RIP puppy dog.

    6 years is way too short. Sorry you have to go through that. I remember he struggled with something earlier. There is only one flaw to dogs and that's that they aren't with us long enough.
