I'm a new Tacoma owner, and I've been thinking about blacking out the emblems as well. Lots of good ideas here, but my question is... would painting the emblems while they're still on the vehicle be a bad idea? :) You could tape all around and between the letters, then apply some kind of paint that could be brushed on... would that work? Seems like that might be easier than removing and reapplying the emblems, but again, I have zero experience with this kind of thing. Thoughts? :)

You’re the only person I’ve ever heard willing to do that. I think the issue with that idea is that you won’t be able to get a clean finish and paint the entire emblem. But if people plasti dip their emblems then I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to paint them.

Agreed. I think the finished product might not look as good and your not saving yourself that much time leaving them on the truck. Only if you were derping them. I derped them and it didn’t last as long as I would like so o removed and painted

Okay cool, that's what I was wondering. :) So those are the considerations I'll have to take into account. Out of curiosity, what does "derp" mean in this context?

For anyone still worried about there being no cutout in the “A” in the link from the second post, it’s there. Just need to look harder 7592F9F0-3CF5-44DE-B5E3-A44BD68D2F54.jpg

You can do a flat or satin clear coat. If you don't clear coat it though the paint has no protection against the sun.

I agree, but mine have been on for almost a year and a half and they look like I just painted them.

By the way my truck sits in zero shade all day and gets a beating from the sun.

Also when I had my 2nd gen I did the same black and they turned out great... Until I put a flat clear. It gave it more of a dingy black look instead of the crisp really dark flat black. I’ve been hesitant to do that again. Plus, even if in a couple of years I need to buy another set and do them to replace, that’s fine with me and that’s a pretty cheap deal very few years.

I haven't seen what the flat clear looks like on top of flat paint even though I do have it. Satin clear has been the only one I have actually tried, and luckily it looked good enough for me not to experiment more.

Yes. Several members posted in this thread they hadn't seen these for 2018s. Granted their posts are from a couple of months ago but I wanted to let other members know they are available now, the overlays. Does Toyota even sell solid black emblems?
