Welp... I was just getting ready to clean my dove from today when I heard one of our dogs, chompers, start going ape shit in the back yard. I grabbed my pistol, ran outside and immediately got hit by the stench of skunk. I went back in, grabbed a flashlight and followed the barking to the side yard. Chompers successfully defended his territory and the skunk made a get away through the chain link gate. I found chomps drooling, foaming, snotty, red eyed and basically looking like he got pepper sprayed. And let me tell you boys, if you think you know what a skunk smells like, but have never smelled the actual spray... you have no damn idea how eye wateringly pungent and garlicly it really is. It's fucking horrible! He seems to be ok now. My daughter is giving him a bath with a skunk shampoo recipe because I didn't wanna get my hands covered in the stuff and taint the dove meat. Never a dull moment! Here's our fierce defender, post victory lap. Lol

Forgot to include this picture from the opener. Found him in the road while driving back. Pushed him off so he wouldn’t get run over. Only second one I have ever seen.

I bagged my first collared Eurasian yesterday. They're quite a bit bigger than mourning dove, maybe slightly bigger than a whitewing. I was pretty stoked about it.IMG_20180908_170027994.jpg

First one ever? The spot I hunt has quite a bit of them. I think last year, I knocked down a dozen of them before I got my limit of mournings.

About how long does it take to clean one of those? Never been hunting for birds or small game.

3-4 minutes per bird if you breast them out, which is what I do. I basically either break, twist and rip; or snip (with poultry shears) the wings off, yank the head off, then find the bottom of the breast bone, jam your thumb up under it until the skin breaks, rip the breast away from the rest of the body and discard the body. Then pull the skin and feathers off the breast. That actually took longer to type than it does to preform. haha

I’m in Phx but if I were you, I’d hunt the red rock area, my friends from Tucson hunt the area quite a bit and limit out. You could also find spots near piccacho.

Most of Tucson ends up in redrock or picacho. I went up there a couple times last year and there really wasn't much flying and there's groups of hunters every 100' or so in every tree line. I've heard so many stories of people getting peppered by other hunters that it kinda left a bad taste in my mouth for going out there. It sounds like your buddies have some prime realestate out there. I thought I'd found a good spot this year because opening day was great and the day after wasn't bad either but it's dried up heavily since then. I probably could have limited on day two but the two guys i was with gave me their 7 birds, which put me at 15 so I called it early. I guess I just need to keep looking, or befriend a farmer in redrock who doesn't let the general public hunt their land.

Hypothetically, would that be a good spot to try out?

Just south of it. On the east side of the road, there is a gate. Go through it. There are two hidden tanks there. I’ve pulled in about 100 yards from the gate and shot a limit in 30 mins in the afternoon. Watch out for snakes, especially by the water. I’ve killed 2 rattlers out there in an afternoon.

Drop me a PM with your Email if you’re not sure where I’m talking about.
