The Saab turbo is cool, fast as hell. But in the end, everyone has a “Saab” story and it’ usually well before 100k miles.

I can't say I recall ever knowing anyone with a Saab, I have probably only seen 1 or 2 on the roads in the past 20 years, Subaru sightings are pretty rare around here too as the closest Dealer is probably around 100 miles.

We got lucky there also. Solid as hell. We actually call it the Target because it was in about six not-at-fault collisions and one at-fault. All were at or near stoplights where folks slammed me and pushed me into other cars. Mine was for someone stopping hard for a yellow light in the wet. We were on a real first-name basis with a great independent body shop. Those amazing seats saved my neck.

The only mechanical trouble was the rear window regulators. They tore themselves up. And, there were eight or so different TSBs for the engine breather system. Ours had four different versions installed, but never any problems related to it. We sold it at 140k, I think? Mainly because it sat months at time when I started riding motorcycles and finally convinced the wife that I needed a second bike for the winter commutes.

Our volvo was crap by comparison, but nothing more major than the steering rack. Wouldn't buy another though.

We kind of feel the wrong Swede got the short end of the stick.

That’s good info for owning a lot of different manufacturers!

Yeah. It took too long to settle for cars coming from the right country.

Add in a Chevy Celebrity (my first car), a Merc Topaz (wife's first), a Geo Metro 4dr MT (wife's when we met / we should have hung on to it), the PoS 1996 Dodge Stratus, the PoS Ural, and my mistress, the old Ducati ST4? :D We've finally wised up and are only buying Japanese. When the Duc dies, I'm grabbing a VFR800. I hope to get an old hondyamisuki enduro soon.

Some FJ’s had problems with the engine bay side of the front quarter panels. They were splitting there. I thankfully didn’t have the issue but was on the lookout for it. I don’t know what their resolutions were, but you might troll the blue room and see if you can figure out what they did for warranty coverage.

Yep! I had a Stratus as a rental and liked it. My mistake. I thought that they were over the malaise era. Boy was I wrong! The wife was preggers and drove it for the last three months that we had it with a blown steering rack because she felt that she could get in and out of it easier than the saab. A new rack would have doubled the value of that PoS and we were starting to shop around!

The Celeb was about to die at just over 100k. The Topaz failed many times, in many ways from all the stories.

I agree. If I had to buy domestic, it'd be a Ford.

You're late to the party. He already traded his Tacoma for a new T4R... see above.

Sad that people are happier with a 10 year old SUV design or a 14 year old previous truck design that these trucks still basically use today. Than these 3rd gen Tacoma’s. How many buyers on here have traded out for a 4 R or went back to a second gen? I’ve seen several, and it’s pretty sad.

Anyways congrats OP, no point in playing games and being jerked around. Glad you’re finally happy in the 4R. Enjoy it!

I can see your point. It is crazy that people had to trade.

OTOH if TSB-0058-18 and / or TSB-0062-18 were loaded for the start of 3rd Gen production, how different would things be? A couple 1mb files? That's amazing to just think about.

There'd still be howling / leaking diffs, CHMSL leaks, LCA howling, and door seals, but?

Edit: Entune. Mediocre, but somewhat functional. Average shot over the bow for a stock system?

This issue seems to be a rare one, but seems like a legacy issue. I think the OP did what he thinks best and that's okay. Myself, I would have tried a bit longer before taking it to a welder. No harm either way.

You'd have to pay me to swap my 2017 Sport to a 2nd gen or TR4. I have driven a 2nd gens many times - including this weekend a 2014 Sport AC 6' bed MT with the 4.0 and under 50k. I got into my sport and after driving it over ~45 minutes and still thankful I choose my truck over the 2015 I was looking at. Yeah it was a nice truck, but would have been bummed choosing old vs new. I persoanlly have not driving a new 4R, but no MT and I use truck bed all the time.

I’m just gonna say that that wasn’t the only spot. I was gonna have to make an insurance claim as I don’t have $5,300 to spend on the truck just to make it “right” again. I thought screw that, why would I want to keep something with diminished value and a car fax ding. In my situation this was the best move for ME.

Whoa! Thanks for the additional info.

Just me, but I really like my Taco. It isn't bad trading or fixing, but I would be hosed for that kind of lay out also.

You decision is good. I'm just not right a lot of the time.
