Twice this evening I have read of people who were afraid of thieves/vandals cutting open a soft tonneau cover or a soft cap and stealing the contents of the truck bed.

How many people have actually had stuff stolen from under a soft tonneau/cap?

How many have had their hard tonneau/cap broken into?

    What about vandalism?

Curious as to if this is really that big of a problem? And if it is more common with canvas tonneau/caps.

I always wonder about this. Because honestly, if I wanted to steal something out of your soft top, I'd cut it. And if I wanted something out of your hard top...I'm gonna find a hammer.

A little something every chance we get.
Over the years, four soft roll ups on four Tacos. Never an issue, in small town Texas. When I go to Austin or San Antonio, didn't worry either. And never had a tailgate stolen either. Also, left the truck full of "home improvement" stuff with the cover rolled up. Never a problem. Paranoia is overrated!

What kind of restaurant parking lot has cars getting broken into and nobody doing anything about it? Sounds like you need to move to a different city.

Haha, but seriously thieves will find a way and they are the worst

I will have to agree, if they want it, nothing you do will make any difference. On cross country trips with a few things left in the truck, my family was paranoid. Nothing ever happened. If you want to live your life in fear, that is pretty easy. Or, you can buy an armored truck I suppose. Or avoid suspicious spots, although I have overnighted in many. But, my vehicles don't look "over the top" either.

I was one of the people that said something about the trolls here cutting a soft top- yes, it happens to jeeps and convertibles; I've never known anyone with one of those soft covers for pickups. I'm personally aware of it happening to several friends and a couple of people I know including a neighbor who had his BMW top slashed- he's your stereotypical BMW driver though, Ray Ban aviators, 1980s popped collars and all, and he locks his doors. I never had it happen on my Land Cruisers but I usually had the rear window rolled up or the doors off; I have come back to find one of my soft doors open. I also had a window smashed and the rear window snatched open on my first Tacoma. Maybe you just have a higher class of ghetto goblin where you live. :notsure: If we'd start hanging thieves from street lamps it might cut done on thefts some.

If I'm ever in Lockhart, I might just, if only to make a point :D

Sounds like someone hasn't been to the 909 and beheld the Inland Empire.

I've been driving around with soft tonneaus, and soft jeep tops, since 2002 and have never had one slashed. I'm not dumb enough to leave a computer back there, but nobody has bothered skis, sailing gear, camp stoves, or power tools. Knock on wood.

LOL, you'll have to dig now. And that's more work than most thieves like to do.

Typical - must not have had a knife! They will get what they think they are looking for, doesn't matter what we put up.
Altho, since they could simply roll my tonneau out of the way, maybe I should post an instruction sticker! "Don't Knife It, Roll It! - Don't Do The Window Either, I'm Already Broke!"
