    Ok heres where it starts:
I've been working at a grocery store for the past 7 months. Not that great of a job but hey I'm a college student and it gives some extra cash. I don't mind the "work". Its very simple and tedious. One of the co-managers has gotten under my skin though. I called in Sat. My grandmother (has terminal cancer) was rushed to the hospital about 3 hrs before I had to go in. I call in 2 hours before I am scheduled to work because I was going to Memphis to be with my grandma. I talk to my manager and tell him I have a family emergency. He asks what the emergency is. I politely tell him that I would rather not get into specifics of it but my grandmother was ill. He procedes to yell at me for 4 mins because I won't tell him exactly what is going on. He is saying that I'm obligated to tell him exactly why I won't be there because I'm employed there. He also says he wants proof that my grandmother was even there.
Quite frankly, it was the most unprofesional thing I have ever seen. I have been looking for another job anyway bc the pay isn't very good. Should I look harder you think? He is just an all around dick. I'm going to adress it with him tomm I think and prolly the main store manager. Should I use the union considering I pay them 8 bucks a week?

I work at a grocery store, and I use the union to the max. Ive been in the field for almost 6 yrs and Ive dealt with some assholes before but the union always helps me out. Learn all the rules and use them to your advantage, nothing pisses off a napoleon character more than you being smart enough to one up him. Good luck.

Wow, sounds like a real dick. If it makes you feel any better I and many many more have worked with people like this. It's just part of work.

As far as him asking for the specifics and asking for proof that she was there, sounds like he's going way too far. I could be wrong, but I don't think he is aloud to ask that, or maybe that's just for your information.

I would suggest going to the main store manager and letting him know everything, like you said you might. But in a professional matter, and clam matter. Also let him know that all you want to do, is come to work and work. I know that sounds "corny", but it let's them know where you're coming from, and what your main focus is.

Also if the company is a bigger type of company like Vons or albertsons, they usually will have strict guidelines for stuff like this. I would highly suggest reviewing information on your "rights" as an employee, and polices on this. Manager may be steeping over bounds on this subject.
If main store manager does nothing, and situation gets worse or same. You may want to get into contact with corporate, they will usually have people or managers that will specialize in these situations.
With all of these contacts with managers or others, it need's to be as professional as possible. No need to get mad, or confrontational. When you get mad, you lose your point.
    Calm matter and professional!
Also would not recommend leaving, just yet. Would try to work it out as much as possible. If you keep bouncing from job to job it looks bad on your resume, so try to stay with the job as long as possible. You don't want people to think that you are the kind of employee that quits at the drop of a hat.

Hope that helps. And I hope the best for your Grandma.
