Where do you plan on fishing?? The location can help dictate gear you will want or need...

g loomis is top of the line. but you really cant go wrong with an ugly stick! pretty sensitive with how durable they are...

Really depends on what lures you are throwing, what reels you are using, fishing from the bank or from a boat, etc.

Your question isnt specific enough for a good answer.

    Many variables to consider.

Couple of budget friendly general thoughts.....

Garage sales, pawn shops and thrift stores to start looking

    One piece rods

Penn reels. Even their newer Chinese stuff you can get parts for.

Worm hole of a question. As others have said you need to pick a pole (or 20) depending on what your casting, what youre targeting, where youre fishing.

Loooots of variables come into play.

I love my Abu Garcia Veritas rods for all around bass fishing and they are inexpensive too.

I get a fairly cheap rod and a halfway decent reel with good line. Can't go wrong, no need for a really expensive rod as it will in all likelyhood get damaged at some point in transport. The real and line are what to look into. Bait caster or spinning reel.... go with spinning reel for beginning and practice with someone else's bait caster before buying one. They can be tricky and aren't for everyone.
I run a cheap light weight shakespear jig rod with a abu Garcia revk reel with 6lb braided line ( use fluorocarbon for leaders ) for freshwater and fish for the biggest fish I can find. Typically trout or catfish.
