2nd gen maintenance required light

When I mentioned it to my dealer, which I don't see often, he said you could try a piece of black tape over it until you change the oil.
There is probably a sensor in the oil pan.....I can understand Toyota wanting its customers to change there oil at a specified mileage, it may be a requirement for leased vehicles too.

Or if it REALLY bugs you, dump the oil, put it right back in and then reset the light.

Black tape? With my luck it would leave some yucky adhesive on the plastic that would smear when I tried to clean it.....better not go there

 

BTW, my light will reset without actually changing the oil. Don't know if you guys were joking about that or not...

 

You can? Good to know for future reference. I just bought my truck and have only changed the oil one time, and it reset perfectly the first time.

I wonder why Jeff can't get his to reset?

 

OK ! So we won't use black tape but how about if you cut a business card down to fit it just right and colored it black ? Or a small piece of black cloth?
My truck , as you know is a 06 and in between the first and 2nd oil change I did try to reset it, just the way in the instructions ..... I definately will try it again, but not today as it is absolutely pouring out side, we in New England are getting hammered by some tropical rainstorm that has swept up the east coast.
5 inches of rain expected over three days.....making it tough for a fisherman like me to get any relaxation.

So I will try the reset next time I get in the truck. In reality my dealership does very good work as far as I know, now I don't usually visit the dealership, as I like to use a independent mechanic figuring the dealerships (as a whole ) have taken the public for a ride many times.
My mechanic that I trust was unhappy to see me buy a Taco, as he said his income would drop since I was not bringing my 96 Monte Carlo around anymore, just a little joke, when I told him I was dumping my GM product for a new Taco truck he was all for it.

OMG, thank you for this thread. I called the dealer to get how to reset Main Reqd, as I knew it was a reminder. They insisted I had to come in for it. What a joke! Thank you!

I wish Toyota would implement a OIL LIFE METER like Honda does and gives a percentage of useful oil life left..

Just a funny related to the trip odometer. I chuckle each time I make it into the dealership and they put the key in the ignition and turn it to "ON" just to change/read the odometer reading. No keys are needed to illuminate and/or switch the odometer from Trip A, Trip B, or ODO. So you can switch it to the ODO setting before even inserting the key.

 

Never knew of this so I just tried it on my 2010 Tacoma and yes it works.
On our 2009 Camry it does not however.
I imagine the service reps check so many a day it is just easier to turn on the key rather than try and fail and then turn the key.
