Is there any way to keep the transmission from downshifting in S Mode, or otherwise? I live and drive in the mountains and the huge jumps in downshifting over passes is a pain. Is there any way to be able to lock the tranny in a gear so you can step on it on the uphill without a lurching downshift? This is an especially big problem when towing our drift boat.

Try ECT. Or a manual tranny!

You can shift the automatic transmission up or down (+or-) manually in S mode to keep it in a gear and prevent it from upshifting thus allowing you to keep the engine in its power band and preventing it from downshifting when not desired.

There is a video done by Toyota on YouTube demonstrating steering wheel mounted paddle shifting of an automatic transmission in a Camry.
It also shows and states that the automatic transmissions with floor shifter can be shifted the same as a vehicle with the paddle shifters.
The Tacoma transmission is a manumatic.
And yes I know it’s not fully described in the owners manual so people will disagree.

The Toyota video shows that they can be utilized in that manner.

It works well. Try it out.
If you start out in 1st gear in S-mode, you can hold each gear as long as you desire while shifting upward, just like a manual transmission, only without the clutch.
And additionally, you can downshift manually as desired as you slow down, and finally come to a stop in 1st gear.

I’ve driven a lot of manual transmissions over the years.
Yes it’s not a manual, but it works well shifting manually.

Its not a manumatic. Not at all. You are only setting the max gear you want it to be in. If you set it to S5 it can still be in first gear. Yes you can simulate shifting, especially if you constantly move it + at high revs and - at low revs, but dont mislead people.

Gas pedal - don't baby it. 3.5 does well in high RPM situations.

If the truck thinks it's going to stall, it will shift no matter what. Unless it's a manual

Not possible, is why I own a manual. I sacrificed cab room for bed length.

Speed Booster by Digipower. I set it on the "Track Mode" and I'm now able to drive at 65-70 at the highest gear without it gear hunting.

Im on 33's, stock gearing and a lot of weight.

Or you could get OVTune and not have to worry about anything else

TRD sport has access cab 6' bed manual, and SR 4X4 did 2016/2017.

If you are talking double cab long bed then yes no manuals. Which is a bummer.

Or you could just use the features the truck came with (S4) and save $800.

You've never had the pleasure of having OVTune, you not only are able to cruise through hills in 5 or 6th gear, but you also gain more torque and power in the mid range rpms and a lot of people report getting better fuel economy

You're right, I haven't used the tune. I haven't felt the need. What I do know is a lot of people with the tune from OV that have also recieved the new TSB from Toyota reported that they probably wouldn't have bought the tune if the truck had come with the new TSB from the get go. I'll try that first and save myself some money.

I'm a big fan of the tune from Matt so don't get me wrong, but I tow frequently with my truck and none of the advantages you have listed have ever been a concern for me. In regular driving my truck goes through hills in 5th and 6th gear now... I mean mostly 5th, but...

The extra torque would help with towing

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Have you applied the most recent ECU update which addresses Trans Shift points, throttle mapping, etc?
If not you should, I tow up mountains every month. This update changed my truck dramatically. Let me find the thread.... this is no BS, it really improves the drivability of the truck across the board.

    Here it is.

Thread title could use a question mark. I thought the OP had a new fix idea.
