I'd say that's certainly a safe statement. I'd be quite surprised if it wasn't being worked on. Maybe a crack team of coders war-rooming it 24x7, or maybe Fred the janitor works on it every other Thursday after lunch.

The real question is when it'll be released, and whether it fixes more issues than it creates new. ;)

Does anyone know if Toyota had an update to fix this issue? I am having the same problem with my iphone6 plus and iOS 10.3.3. I delete the Bluetooth profile, re-connect, will work 1 time, then stops....

That pisses me off to I have a iPhone 6 and I have to delete my phone from the Tacoma and forget the device from my phone and even do a soft reset on the entune system then pair it back up and turn on show notifications on my iPhone phone and it works until I turn the truck off and when I start it back up it doesn't let you read Tex messages anymore more but when it does work I could hear them while driving they need to come up with a fix for this cause that's agervating as hell

Apple does not allow unlicensed 3rd party devices ( Panasonic/Entune ) to DISPLAY text iMessages directly. All they allow is the message to be read aloud. All you'll see is a pop up that you have a message. It will read the text to you audibly or you can choose to ignore. Apple also does not support (unlicensed) replies directly to iMessage using Entune. The work around is on your phone to click your microphone button in the reply section on iMessage and when the truck mic audio comes on, (beep), speak your reply to the text. You have to then click Done and then Send on your phone to reply. Yes very lame, but thats all we have for now from TOYOTA! - They aren't playing nice with Apple. Toyota is one of the few manufacturers that have signed license agreements with Apple for their CarPlay technology. Here's a list of all the vehicles that have full iPhone controls on the dash - https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/available-models/ Yes, it's very maddening that a Kia and a dang Suzuki have this technology installed.

mmmm I kind of agree with you, but mostly disagree. I travel a lot for work so I get myself into plenty of rentals and whatever system Dodge uses seems to work just fine with displaying text messages when you're at a stop. Also, bringing up siri from the phone button is a lot faster on Dodge, Hyundai, and Nissan compared to Toyota. I have wait about 5 seconds before I cans start talking to siri from pressing the phone button.

On my Tacoma, it will notify me when a text message comes in, but I can only dismiss it. While driving, It should have the option to "play" the message through the text to speech function. This has worked only a handful of times. It works whenever it wants to. While at a stop, I would be able to touch the "read" button where it will take me to the message, but that also only works once in a blue moon.
iOS 11 will be out soon; I have not faith that will improve anything, but i'm hoping.

Models with CarPlay are great until you need to use maps.

I also agree with this because my wife's Lexus has the exact same interface and her car will read text messages and give you more then ignore. It also has the read button available. Just the entune on the Tacoma doesn't work properly. Its a software issue with the Tacoma and head unit that needs to be fixed.

I agree, this sucks azz, I love my Tacoma but the technology in this truck SUCKS! I traded a 2012 Acura that RUNS circles around this 2017 Tacoma technology wise.....and they have 5 years difference between them. You would think this Tacoma would be more up to date already! I don't get how Toyota you can excel in some areas and suck in others and on top of all that why the F doesn't Lexus and Toyota all have the same technology in them radio interface wise? Anyway, I get off of my soap box now.....

Actually, if you were to go through all of the menus, Nav., etc of the Tacoma and NX, they look and function pretty much the same. The NX has a few more options then the Tacoma like AC controls but functionality is exactly the same. Oh, the NX doesnt have a touch screen. Sucks in my opinion but I guess they feel luxury cars dont need them....Who knows. My wife wishes her car had the touchscreen like my Taco does. In Hawaii, we dont have the entune with apps, because they claim the satellites dont reach here, so that is another thing sucky about the entunes in Hawaii on both the Lexus and Toyota.

My messaging just stopped working a couple weeks ago - even before the IOS 11 update. I have a 6s and haven't had any issues until then. Super annoying!

OK I know this is late for the thread but I'll just add this bit of info. Just trying to set the texting up in my 2018 Tacoma built 2-23-18. iphone 6 using 11.4.1....
Everything worked fine but outgoing texts. Entune says the phone "does not support this feature" so I just follow #28 on this thread and push the phone call start button on the steering wheel instead of the voice commands button. This connects phone and sends out text that I dictate.....It works fine. My wifes 2016 Ford Explorer uses "Sync" and it functions exactly the way the Toyota Entune system is supposed to work....So go figure.

When I get a msg using an iPhone X, it pops up asking to read it or ignore. But to reply, I have to hold the phone answer button to start Siri and reply that way.

It’s an Apple limitation that “most” units fall victim too. They blame it on how iMessage is supposed to work and “most” units don’t comply with iMessage the way “they” want it too. As far as your wife’s explorer working, some units (vendors) went around Apple for it to work. But Apple has since worked with all vendors (ford, Chevy, Dodge, etc.) to implement car play as the only option. If the vendor places a unit without car play, messaging on Apple isn’t supposed to work.

Yeah I have to play with it for a couple of days. Right now it doesn't seem like that big of a deal to do it this way but I have to try it all different ways ie, from my imac which means imessage as well as, phone to phone texting and seeing all the little things that the vehicle screens are going to do. I don't use it that much since I retired so it's going to have to be a real PIA for me to get upset with it.
I just thought it was interesting that Ford/Sync would work from the steering wheel voice command of the Escape just like the Toyota/Entune says it will do on the Tacoma but doesn't.....At least on my truck.

A friend of mine and I both have '18 model Toyotas, mine is a Tacoma and hers is a RAV4. What ended up working for us was going to Settings-Notifications-Messages and then turning the Show on Lock Screen, Show in History, and Show as Banners on in addition to the instructions provided from Toyota. After we did that we both get text notifications and the system will read the texts as well.
Not saying it will work for everybody, but before we did that it didn't work. Now it does.

It won’t let you read while in motion.

OK this is way to long but here are 7 items that I verified over the weekend that happen in my truck when driving and when stopped. ( iphone 6)

1 Choices when text comes in are “read or ignore” along with the incoming sound. If you chose read it will audibly read the message to you.

2 When you stop the truck it will display the readout AND speak the message. So when you stop at a light etc. the truck is not moving and the message will show.

3 If the truck is in motion the screen says “message cannot be displayed while vehicle is in motion,” so it will be read aloud to you only if you choose read.

4 I have to press and hold the “phone” button to access the mobile assistant to dictate an answer to the text, in other words go directly through my phone and the truck can be in motion or stopped to do this. ( I am using i6 phone.)

5 When you are in the mobile assistant it will access all your phone info and do most of the entune options like you see in post #28.

5 All this messaging between iphones and truck also does show up on my imac under messages.

6 When I turn the engine off all messages disappear and cannot be brought back as far as I know but, they do stay on the imac.

7 I don’t understand but, nothing at all has shown up on my small “messages” screen that is between the tach and speedo. No messages or counts of messages. Maybe I have something turned off?

    SUMMARY:

Entune won't let you send texts. (at least on iphone 6).....SO

Mobie assistant will let you send texts. but...You have to press the phone button instead of voice command button.

The voice command button for Entune lets you speak commands for Entune functions such as your radio controls and weather, but it does not allow (iphone 6) to message out. You get the warning that your connected iphone does not have the Message Access Profile (MAP) connection required. So it won't let you send a text out unless you connect to siri. However Androids should work fine. Inconvenient yes , stupid yes. My best guess is that somewhere between Toyota and Apple there is an issue....So for us iphone consumers Entune will not send messages unless you go through Apple/Siri. So you press the "phone" button to return a text through Mobile Assistant

My only compliant about these trucks. I wish Toyota would just give us Apple Carplay. I had it on my previous car and it was seamless.
