Thanks for this. I for some reason or another have been doing two things that are on the list for stones. Eating lots of sugar (more than normal) and not drinking enough water. All stop on any sugar intake and drinking water like a fish.

I couldn’t imagine going through this again!

I agree. Nothing I have ever experienced before and I’m pretty good with pain tolerance.

That thing looks scary! Mine is only 5 mm. Which is as big as it can be to pass it on your own

I’ve had a couple. Terrible experience. I must have looked like a dope fiend when I limped into the E-room. They wouldn’t give me any pain medication. I passed out from the pain. When I woke up, I felt normal. They gave me a screen to piss through and there it was. All that pain from a stone smaller than a grain of rice. Jesus

Thank God I had some pain medication in my iv within 20 min of my arrival or I probably would of passed out too!

They should give you a screen to pee through so you can get the stone(s), bottle it up and give it to them for analysis. Mine have been calcium based and I was advised to lay off milk/cheese/etc.

My first one was so large it got stuck in my kidney and wouldn't pass. When it hit I went to the floor, curled up and was unable to move. Pain unlike any other. They did a CT scan and the damn thing was about 1/4 inch long.

I got lithotripsy for that one. That's when they bombard the stone with sound waves to shatter it into a lot of smaller pieces so you can pass them. Imagine peeing out a hundred tiny shards of glass. I didn't want to drink anything for fear of having to pee!

I think I'm over due for one since I typically only drink coffee and beer (and sometimes coffee flavored beer).

My family doc recommended I lower dairy since my stone was calcium.
I'm lactose intolerant so it's pretty limited anyway. The Urologist I saw told me that any dairy cause was hardly possible as calcium is a major component in the body.
    Salt is the problem!

You have my deepest sympathy! I had one a few years ago that looked like the Miami Heat logo and embedded in the tube between the kidney and the bladder. After three days, they finally had to go get it. I tolerate pain pretty well, had concussions, broken bones, sprains and strains playing sports and nothing came even close to this pain. Hope you are on the mend!

I had one in college, worst experience of my life. When I went to the hospital I couldn't even sit in the waiting room. I went outside and paced back and forth, stopping to throw up here and there. Mine was calcium. I used to pop tums all the time. Not any more.

You're lucky to be that close to port. My CE passed three gallstones while on board. First two we were underway and two days from land. He chalked it up to food poisoning and diabetes. The third one we were in port and he went straight to the hospital and then home. I found out at 0500 with a phone call to my stateroom... CE went to the hospital, you're the CE now. That was a long hitch.

Sorry to gear about the stone. My first “big” stone was a 7x8x9mm stone that occurred during a Urology conference so there wasn’t a single Urologist within hundreds of miles. I saw an ER doc (total idiot) that told me it was a huge stone but if I drank enough water maybe I could pass it. He gave me two bags of fluids and sent me home to “push” fluids. Bad idea. The next morning I went in to see a 90 plus year old doctor that was holding down the Office for his son (away at the conference). He laughed and said “son, no one can pass that stone. Don’t drink a drop of water.” He put me in the hospital to do a stint to keep the stone from moving until the equipment, which was broken, could be repaired to break up the stone. That took 2 weeks. A total of 3 plus weeks and 2 surgeries later and the stone was finally broken up. I was so excited until I realized the only way for the broken up firey molten lava shrapnel to come out was well, you know......

My son has had this happen before. The whole side of his face swelled up. When it happened we were told to take NSAIDs and to suck on a lemon.

I’m not sure where I’m at in this. I have the Lithotripsy appt tomorrow around 11. It happened on Wednesday, I’ve been moping around this boat, unable to hold down any food. Sometimes so nauseous I couldn’t hold down any water. I woke up today feeling better, able to eat light foods and I can slightly feel something in the kidney region. I guess Illknow more tomorrow on where it is and how we can proceed. I’m hoping it’s in my bladder and ready to come out...

Hang in there. For those that have never experienced this, it truly sucks. My stone was the single most painful experience of my life, and I deal with cancer pain daily. Once you have the Lithotripsy, the remnants have to come out, and I hate to break it to you, but that sucks too. They will likley give you something to numb you up so the burning from passing the broken up stone won’t be so bad. I completely stopped all soda (the culprit for mine) after that experience. I haven’t had a soda since January 2014 and will never have one again. I was a changed and very humbled man after that experience. I had passed numerous smaller stones up to that point and never understood why people had such a hard time with them - until I had to pass a big one. I developed sympathy and empathy in a hurry.
