Hello all, I had a 2005 Trd sport 4x4 purchased new for 10 years. Traded it in for a brand new 2015 GMC Sierra all terrain 4x4. Now 4 years in and only 20k miles on it I have the bug again for a Tacoma. I like the look of the new trd sport and pro but want something that will last and after reading all the glitches with the 3.7 and tranny shifting issues I am thinking about buying a 2.7 sr5 auto access cab. I do not need all the high tech gadgets all I do is travel 3 miles to work and haul some barrels of grass and home depot runs. Dont tow or offroad. On Toyotas website there is not much info. Do these have heated mirrors? Heated seats? Rear defog? Or any other basic options? Looking for some real world reviews on the 3rd gen sr5 2.7 auto and any other feedback and thoughts.

    Thanks

I think tow only comes standard on v6 models. As well as auto slide glass on double cab.

It has a power slider, you mean. They dont have defoggers on the rear.

You say you don’t need the gadets but all of the options you listed aren’t basic. And aren’t even on the Limited (trucks don’t need a rear defrost).
The SRs don’t have fog lights, cruise, they might now have itermittent windshield wipers. They are the true basic model.
SR5 will have more features like that.

You need to test drive the 3rd Gen before you consider buying. It rides nothing like your old 2005.

You may find you want a used 2nd Gen

Maybe just buy the 4cyl at least you know you paid for a 4cylinder and not a 3.5 that drives like one

How many engine and transmission complaints on here do you need to see before you realize it’s a fact of life not a troll

The brochure will tell you exactly what is and isn't available on the various trim levels...

When you make comments about the V6 driving like a 4 cylinder, you come off as a whining nay sayer who didnt do his due dilligence when buying the truck. Guess you will do your research next time.

Figured I would open a can of worms with my questions:argue: Brings back good memories of the good old days back on Toyota nation and this forum. Well I am going to test drive both the sr5 4 and the trd 6 this weekend. Just wanted real world feedback on both. I know I heard the 3.5 was used in cars for years but have not researched much on it. Just want to see if it is as sturdy as the 2.7

2.7L is more proven. The 3.5 has a lot of issues if you don’t believe it just look at all the complaints here from people and all of Toyota’s attempts at putting software updates to try to quell the critics. Truck drives worse after it gets more miles and learns driving habits so when it’s new or when you have the software updated the truck is in learn mode and drives better for awhile. Had several software updates now and this has been my experience each time.

The shifting issues are gone. They came out with a new software update for the ECU and it drives just like it should and am super happy with it. There really is no “glitches”. I’ve had zero issues with mine for the past 1.5 yr and 21k miles. The 3.5 is used in various other vehicles, it’s nothing new. Yes it’s still a new truck and platform and they will need to work bugs out just like anything that’s new. The SR5 does not have heated mirrors or seats or rear defog. You’ll want a TRD with the tech package for those.

I haven’t driven a 4 cyl but the 3.5 gives it just enough power to feel like a truck, I can’t imagime how bogged down the 2.7 would be especially in a double cab.

When did Toyota issue a software update for the 3.5? Rhetorical question, actually, because those updates have been related to the transmission, not the engine.

Yes, I know...0062...and it was released 17Jul2018. It was referenced as an update for the engine, which is incorrect.

I'd you're coming from a 2015 GMC Sierra 4x4 you will not like an SR5 4 cylinder... just saying.

You might be right. Everyone I know thinks im nuts for even considering it. My GMC is like the day it rolled out of the factory with oly 19k miles and fully loaded. But its hard to fight the bug. I guess this weekend will tell once I drive them both.
